The day many boxing and video game fans have been waiting for is now less than a month away. Undisputed, the upcoming boxing video game is set to release, and I have every piece of information you need to know before it releases and you make your buying decision.
Undisputed releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on October 11. Here are the ten things you should know about Undisputed Boxing.
Undisputed Was Developed to Be a Simulation
I’ve had multiple conversations with Ash Habib, the head of Steel City Interactive. This studio has developed Undisputed since it was eSports Boxing Club, and if there is one element that has remained true, it’s that the game was designed to be a simulation boxing game.
Habib is not just some guy who saw boxing as a sports video game space with a hole in the market. He is a hardcore boxing fan whose passion for the sport has shone through in every conversation.
The vision to create a sim-boxing game with fun and even some arcade elements has produced a title designed to focus on fight strategy, proper punch selection in certain situations, and mastering the control of the ring.
Skill-Gap Gameplay Mechanics
Undisputed will have some pick-up-and-play mechanics and modes, but it was also designed to include advanced gameplay elements.
The movement system is built to help you utilize the speed and footwork of top defensive fighters. If implemented correctly, this movement system will provide multiple paths to victory without determining every fight in a slugfest.
The Roster is Big and Growing
Undisputed will feature more than 70 licensed fighters (male and female) across ten weight classes at launch. The roster includes a mix of current fighters like Canelo Alvarez and Tyson Fury (who are on the cover), Terence Crawford, Claressa Shields, and others. Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., and other legends are also included.
The Undisputed roster will continue to grow in a series of DLC drops that will include new content. I’ve spoken with Jake Paul, and it is expected that he and his upcoming foe, boxing icon Mike Tyson, will be added to the game at some point post-launch.
Realistic Fighter Attributes
Undisputed is aiming to offer the most realistic fighter attributes. In addition to categories like punch power and speed, the fighters have been given traits similar to the badges, quirks, etc, that we see in other sports titles.
There is also specific AI behavior set for the most popular fighters.
Full Career Mode
Players can create a fighter and take them through an amateur career and into the pros with various role-playing choices associated with the coaches, cut men, managers, and promoters. It’s unclear how many years your career can span, and there doesn’t appear to be a story involved, but this aspect of the single-player experience is included.
Online Multiplayer
Fighting other users online was always a top priority for the developers. Much of the early access period on Steam has been spent trying to find the right balance and tuning with online multiplayer.
In Undisputed, users can battle head-to-head online, create custom lobbies for private sessions, or queue up for global matchups.
The online ranking system will be interesting as it will carry much weight when determining whether this part of the game is successful.
Undisputed offers online multiplayer, allowing players to go head-to-head against others, with custom lobbies for private games and online queues for global matchups.
Prize Fights Mode
The Prize Fights Mode is similar to the live events concept in other sports video games. The events will have a variety of themes and challenges. Users may be asked to take over for a fighter in a specific round and challenged to win a fight they were losing in real life.
Users may also be placed on one side of a fantasy matchup and tasked with winning that fight for a reward. The fights can have unique modifications and stipulations.
Customization Options
Boxing video games are almost like wrestling titles; they need a solid customization suite to be genuinely effective. Thankfully, Undisputed will boast an extensive create-a-fighter option, allowing users to create and customize their fighters for career and offline play.
Realistic Visuals
If you were wondering if Undisputed would look like a game on current-gen consoles, rest assured it delivers from a graphical standpoint.
Most every fighter’s likeness has been nailed.
Even the arenas look strong. I hope to see some improvements in the rag-doll physics during knockdowns and knockouts once the game launches. There were some wonky moments during early access.
Future Updates
For now, Undisputed isn’t being developed to be an annual release. Instead, the game is expected to evolve through post-launch updates and content drops.
There is a good chance the game could look very different by this time in 2025.
Be on the lookout for a full review closer to launch and more coverage leading up to the release.
