Although the latest phone released from Apple, the iPhone 16e, is the most affordable model you can now buy, at $599 and up, it’s not so cheap you don’t want to protect it. Here’s a handful of the latest models that third-party manufacturers have developed which aim to address one of the 16e’s shortcomings: the lack of MagSafe.
Note that you can read news of some other cases here at Forbes.
MagSafe, as you’ll know, is the useful system which, through a carefully placed array of magnets, means you can be sure your iPhone is wirelessly charging when you put it on a compatible charging pad, because it snaps satisfyingly into place. Those magnets are missing from the iPhone 16e, but the wireless charging capability is there.
So, some manufacturers reasoned, putting the compatible ring into the case delivers that security of function. That’s true, but note that MagSafe offers faster charging, so the iPhone 16e won’t charge at MagSafe speeds of up to 15W, or in some cases up to 25W, only at 7.5W. But using a case like this will still significantly improve the wireless charging experience, the argument goes.

Otterbox Defender Series XT for MagSafe

Otterbox is a brand synonymous with protection and this case has magnets compatible with MagSafe. The case comes in two parts: remove the upper part before you insert the phone and replace to hold it safe and away from dirt. There’s a cover for the USB-C port to keep it clean. Unfold it to charge via cable or keep it closed and use a MagSafe charging pad. Note the photo shows an earlier iPhone but I can confirm it fits the iPhone 16e.
Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe
$19.99 from smartish.com, £16 from smartish.com
Smartish’s range of iPhone cases is extensive, and the Gripmunk takes its name from a textured-side finish with grooves for fingers to help ensure the iPhone stays in your hand well. Air pocket corners protect it if it’s dropped and there’s a raised bezel around the camera. There are eight colors and patterns to choose from, with some patterns costing a few dollars more.

This is a heavy-duty case, designed to survive a fall of 23 feet. Thicker cases like these aren’t always MagSafe-compatible but this case has what the company says is a 25% stronger magnetic lock to ensure it works.
