Netflix has a new, very popular show in the form of Avan Jogia and Dove Cameron’s erotic thriller 56 Days, which has dominated its top 10 charts for a while, released as a one-time binge, counter to a lot of Amazon’s programing. With that kind of performance, will 56 Days get a season 2?

Well, there isn’t much good news on that front. Namely, no news is bad news in this case.

Oftentimes when there is a new series, even a limited one, there is talk with its creators or stars about returning for a potential second season, particularly if one is well-watched like this. Here, I cannot find a single interview from the cast or creators indicating this might be in the cards, as if there was interest in somehow continuing the story, you would see that.

Second, the original best-seller it’s based on by Catherine Ryan Howard has no sequel, and while she has written many other books, none are the continuation of these characters’ story.

It’s also hard to replicate this plot, based around the concept of all of this taking place across 56 days. There are some lingering questions after the finale so it’s not a hard, hard ending, but it might be a stretch. There is an option it could end up being an anthology with new characters, but that may be a reach.

But again, this is a very well-performing show, planted at #1 outside of the occasional Beast Games episodes since its debut on February 18, nearly two weeks ago. Its binge-drop also means that people are not waiting week-to-week to watch, so that’s even more impressive of a performance.

Amazon, like all streaming services, wants big, recurring hits. An erotic series like this appearing opposite shows like Bridgerton and Heated Rivalry could be a good addition to its lineup. There are also production costs to consider, of which they would be minimal for a series like this, especially when compared to Netflix’s other big blockbusters.

But it’s unlikely, and if you were hoping that 56 Days would continue on from here, you’re probably going to be disappointed. That said, this is still pretty early to hear about a potential renewal, and even if it’s not being discussed publicly, we don’t know what’s happening privately. There’s not a complete lack of hope but I would not hold your breath in this case. Still, with recent trends, I predict we’ll start seeing more explicit romance shows hit the airways.
