The wait for the next James Bond is officially over. Or at least the waiting-to-find-out-if-they’re-looking part. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed this week that auditions for the role of 007 have begun, issuing a statement that is both the most information the studio has shared publicly about the casting process and, simultaneously, almost no information at all.
“The search for the next James Bond is underway,” the statement reads. “While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
The confirmation comes via Variety, which broke the news that auditions began several weeks ago, with Amazon MGM having enlisted one of the industry’s most formidable casting directors to lead the search.
Nina Gold Is In Charge Of Finding The Next James Bond
Amazon MGM Studios has enlisted Nina Gold to find the actor who will play 007 in Bond 26. The appointment, confirmed by Variety via a source with knowledge of the production, is a significant signal about how seriously the studio is approaching the search.
Gold is among the most accomplished casting directors working in prestige film and television, best known for assembling the vast ensemble of HBO’s Game of Thrones across eight seasons, a task that required filling hundreds of roles across a decade of production.
Her additional credits include The Crown, Conclave, Hamnet, Les Misérables, The Martian, and five films in the Star Wars franchise. It was Gold who cast Daisy Ridley as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — a reminder, as Collider noted in its coverage, that the right casting director can make a star rather than simply hire one.
Gold’s appointment replaces, in spirit at least, the long tenure of Debbie McWilliams, who served as Bond casting director across multiple films and was responsible for finding Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton.
The Creative Team Already In Place For The Next James Bond
While the actor remains unknown, the production infrastructure around Bond 26 is already formidable. After Amazon’s reported $20 million buyout of full Bond rights from longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, Denis Villeneuve (you would know him for director the Dune franchise, Arrival and Sicario) is now attached to direct, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing, Steven Knight writing the screenplay, and Tanya Lapointe executive producing.
Speaking at CinemaCon last month, Amazon MGM’s head of film Courtenay Valenti offered the most expansive public statement about the project to date: “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” she said, per Variety.
Filming is expected in late 2026 or early 2027, with a 2028 release anticipated.
What’s Confirmed, What’s Debunked, And What’s Still Circulating
The confirmation that auditions have only just formally begun is itself a debunking of a significant portion of what has been reported over the past year. In February, a source described by TheWrap as a “top talent agent” stated bluntly that every rumour circulating about Bond casting was premature: “Anything you hear on the Bond casting front is bull**** until the script is delivered and the screen tests can happen. There is absolutely no one who is getting this role without testing for it.”
The Hollywood Reporter similarly reported in January that “99 percent of the rumors turn out to be false,” citing a longtime franchise insider, and characterised the Bond casting cycle as a recurring phenomenon in which speculation generates its own momentum regardless of the underlying facts.
Commonly thrown about names are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, or if you think far back enough, Idris Elba.
Of course, if you’re counting people who made hilariously trippy shows about a semi-fictional version of themselves having their life turned upside down because of James Bond casting rumours, there is also the irrepressible Riz Ahmed (go watch Bait now!).
What today’s announcement makes clear is that no decision has been made on the next James Bond, and that any claim to the contrary, however confidently sourced, should be treated with scepticism until Amazon MGM speaks.
