With the St. Louis Cardinals shifting from unexpected postseason hopefuls to near-certain deadline sellers over the past two weeks, the clubhouse has experienced plenty of anxiety.

As the front office determines which veterans can be traded away from some younger talent, trade rumors around the team are now consistent. During a recent interview with MLB Network, veteran Cardinals reliever Ryne Stanek admitted that teammates have been asking him what to expect and whether or not they might be traded.

While the interview was mostly focused on the Cardinals’ intention to sell, host Harold Reynolds did ask Stanek, a veteran of numerous trade deadline transactions, what it’s like when your team opts to acquire win-now talent.

“It’s always cool,” Stanek responded. “It’s just a little jolt of life. Going like, ‘Oh, we’re pushing for it. We know where we’re trying to head’ and some extra reinforcements always kind of bump the morale in the right direction.”

St. Louis Cardinals Veteran Praises Trade Deadline Acquisitions As Team Moves Toward Selling

Only weeks ago, St. Louis might have been positioned to buy. Instead, a difficult stretch after the All-Star break made it clear that the team should stick with a longer-term rebuilding plan. That could include swapping Stanek for a promising prospect.

“The Cardinals’ skid coming out of the All-Star break has dropped them below .500 and cemented them as sellers,” Steve Adams wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “Recently extended infielder and Rookie of the Year candidate JJ Wetherholt obviously isn’t going anywhere, and the Cardinals aren’t moving Home Run Derby champ Jordan Walker now that he’s finally enjoying a breakout performance. Beyond the list of usual suspects known to be available — Dustin May, JoJo Romero, Ryne Stanek, Lars Nootbaar — the Cardinals are at least open to offers on first baseman Alec Burleson…”

As a result, Stanek’s comments on MLB Network carry some additional significance because he experienced both sides of the deadline equation — as a player whose team brought in reinforcements as well as one who seems likely to be traded away.

St. Louis Cardinals Veteran Acknowledges Reality Of Deadline Deals

Stanek has spent enough time around the league to understand why contenders value experienced bullpen arms on short-term contracts and the Cardinals might have originally picked him up with the hopes of moving him at this point.

The Cardinals signed him hoping his elite velocity would translate into more strikeouts in 2026. Even during a challenging season, Stanek continued to showcase one of baseball’s hardest fastballs with a plus slider, splitter and sweeper. His ability to miss bats remained attractive to postseason hopefuls searching for bullpen depth.
