Professional baseball careers often end quietly. For players who spend years grinding through the minor leagues, retirement announcements frequently appear in little more than a transaction log, with little fanfare despite years of dedication to the sport.

That was the case this week for a longtime member of the Chicago Cubs organization, whose career came to an unexpected close just days before his 28th birthday following six seasons in professional baseball.

Chicago Cubs Catcher Ends Professional Career At Midseason

The Cubs’ Triple-A transaction log revealed that catcher Casey Opitz, who spent his entire professional career with the organization, decided to retire on July 27, just three days before he turned 28.

The move brings an end to Opitz’s playing career after six years in the Cubs’ farm system. While he never reached the major leagues, he remained a respected organizational catcher who earned multiple invitations to big league spring training and worked his way as high as Triple-A Iowa.

“Catcher Casey Opitz, who spent his six-year career in professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs organization, suddenly retired,” JP Hoornstra wrote for The Big Lead. “Opitz, 28, last played in a doubleheader for the Cubs’ Triple-A team on July 25, going 0-for-2 with a walk.”

Although Opitz never appeared in a regular-season major league game, the Cubs gave him several opportunities to showcase his progress during spring training.

“Opitz saw his first major league spring training action in 2024 with the Cubs,” Hoornstra added. “In three Cactus League games as a call-up from minor league camp, Opitz went 1 for 2 with a single. Opitz would get 14 more plate appearances with the Cubs in spring training over the 2025 and 2026 Cactus League seasons, but never collected another hit.”

Opitz’s journey with Chicago actually began long before he signed his first professional contract. The Cubs initially selected him in the 27th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of high school, but he chose to attend the University of Arkansas instead. Four years later, after developing into one of college baseball’s top defensive catchers, Chicago drafted him again in the eighth round, beginning the professional career that ultimately remained with one organization from start to finish.

While the major leagues ultimately proved elusive, Opitz spent six seasons climbing the Cubs’ system and earned repeated opportunities to work alongside the organization’s top players in spring training. His retirement closes the book on a career defined by persistence and loyalty to one franchise, even if it ended sooner than many expected and he might look to continue his ties to baseball by coaching next.
