Out Of The Further’ Rotten Tomatoes Review Score Is Near Franchise’s Best

Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth film in the horror franchise, is earning the best reviews from Rotten Tomatoes critics since the 2010 original — but that’s not saying a lot.

Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further plays in preview screenings on Thursday before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday. In the film, a young mother, Gemma (Amelia Eve), raises her daughter in the house she grew up in.

While there, Gemma discovers her ability to not only travel into the mystical purgatory realm known as “The Further,” but also bring lives back from the otherworldly dimension that separates heaven, earth and hell — a special capability that captures the attention of demons housed within.

Rated PG-13, Insidious: Out of the Further also stars Brandon Perea, Sam Spruell, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Island Austin and Lin Shaye — who reprises her franchise role as Elise Rainer.

The review embargo for Insidious: Out of the Further lifted on Wednesday, and as of the publication of this article, the film has received a 64% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer based on 39 reviews. RT’s Critics Consensus, Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings are still pending.

Note: The RT review score for Insidious: Out of the Further will be adjusted as more reviews are posted.

While 63% is only four percentage points above a “rotten” score on RT, Insidious: Out of the Further has managed to land the best score in the six-film franchise since Insidious in 2010, which earned a 66% “fresh” critics’ score based on 175 reviews.

From there, the Insidious franchise went on to score four consecutive “rotten” scores from RT critics. Insidious: Chapter 2 earned a 38% “rotten” score based on 130 reviews, while 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3 improved but was still deemed “rotten” with a 56% score from RT critics based on 127 reviews.

After that, the 2018 chapter in the franchise, Insidious: The Last Key, earned a 35% “rotten” critics’ score based on 110 reviews, while 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door came away with a 39% “rotten” score based on 119 reviews.

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Insidious: Out Of The Further’?

Amelia Emberwing of The Wrap is among the critics on RT who give the film a “fresh” score, but she has some reservations. In her RT review summary Emberwing writes that Insidious: Out of the Further “overcomes a barely OK screenplay to be a fun (disgusting, sometimes terrifying and occasionally funny) ride with a good heart.”

Fred Topel of United Press International also gives Insidious: Out of the Further a “fresh” score, writing on RT, “Following breakout horror hits Obsession and Backrooms, the sixth Insidious shows franchises can still deliver new scares.”

Rocco T. Thompson of Slant Magazine also deems Insidious: Out of the Further fresh, writing on RT, “The film exhibits an admirable disinterest in converting newcomers, offering instead plenty of fan service while also finding a few dark corners and alleyways to explore in the Insidious mythos.”

Scott Tobias of the Guardian is among the critics on RT who give Insidious: Out of the Further a “rotten” score, writing that director Jacob Chase “takes all of this hokum too seriously and the film eventually dips into a harried spectacle of dodgy effects and ghost-foiling tactics that seem to be improvised on the fly.”

Ryan Lattanzio of IndieWire had a particularly harsh reaction to the latest Insidious film, writing in his “rotten” RT review summary, “Direly, dreadfully boring, Insidious: Out of the Further has money on the brain. So do most things, but this time, it’s way too conspicuous and underserving of the epochal year Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is having between Backrooms and Obsession.”

Insidious: Out of the Further plays in Thursday previews before opening in theaters nationwide on Friday.
