Another Sunday and another tricky NYT Connections to solve. If you’re looking for help with today’s puzzling NYT Connections puzzle, this guide is here to help with some extra clues and every connection for the Yellow, Blue, Green and Purple groups.

This is yet another challenging Connections puzzle – or at least I was challenged by it, though maybe that’s not saying much! – so let’s go solve it without delay!

First, of course, I must point you toward my friendly neighborhood streaming guide because you can’t spend all your time playing puzzles or going on picnics or frolicking in the great outdoors. Watch a good movie or something!

Alright, let’s solve this Connections!

If you’re looking for Saturday’s Connections guide, it’s right here. You can play today’s Connections here.

NYT Connections Hints And Answers – Sunday, August 23

Below, we’ll get into some extra hints for each Connections group – Yellow, Blue, Green and Purple – and then the official clues and answers.

Play Puzzles & Games on Forbes

Here are today’s Connections words:

  • vinegar
  • home fries
  • skiing
  • powder keg
  • club soda
  • vacuum
  • vodka
  • baking soda
  • volcano
  • bazaar
  • potato battery
  • time bomb
  • antifreeze
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • tinderbox
  • vichyssoise

Here’s an Extra Hint for Each Connections Group

  • 🟡Yellow group – Kaboom!
  • 🟢Green group – Double letters.
  • 🔵Blue group – If the Irish hadn’t had this famine, they could have made all these things.
  • 🟣Purple group – When you spill wine on your carpet you’ll need these items.

One Word for Each Connections Group:

  • 🟡Yellow group – Powder Keg
  • 🟢Green group – Bazaar
  • 🔵Blue group – Vodka
  • 🟣Purple group – Club Soda

What Are Today’s Connections Groups?

  • Alright, the full spoilers follow here as we get into what the groups are today:
  • 🟡Yellow group – Potentially explosive things.
  • 🟢Green group – Double vowels.
  • 🔵Blue group – Made with potatoes.
  • 🟣Purple group – Household stain removers.

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

  • The full-on answers are below for each group, finally inserting the four words in each category. Spoilers follow. The Connections answers are:
  • 🟡Yellow group – powder keg, time bomb, tinderbox, volcano
  • 🟢Green group – antifreeze, bazaar, skiing, vacuum
  • 🔵Blue group – home fries, potato battery, vischyssoise, vodka
  • 🟣Purple group – baking soda, club soda, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar

Here’s the finished puzzle in the order I solved it:

Today’s NYT Connections is a 2/5 on the Connections Bot difficulty scale and I think some of it was kind of easy, like “potentially explosive things” but I was thrown off by all the “V” words and then the household cleaners and VACUUM, a red herring if ever there was one. Frankly, the Green Group feels more like a Purple Group to me – double vowels? Who looks for these things!? I think I’m just too busy for my own good. My brain is working against me these days.

But there were some other clever misdirects from the puzzle setters at the NYT. VODKA goes with CLUB SODA, for instance. Having two SODAs in one group is sneaky, because we’re trained to think that itself is a red herring. It’s actually just a headfake. ANTIFREEZE, VODKA, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, VINEGAR and CLUB SODA are all liquids. Really the only two words on the whole list that don’t belong in more than one group are BAZAAR and SKIING, and I suppose if I’d been more clever than I am in hindsight, they’d have led me to Green.

How’d you do on today’s Connections? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.

Find more guides to Wordle, Pips and Strands on my blog where you can also follow me for TV and movie and video game coverage. Let me know if you have any fun puzzle games in your rotation that I should try on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Have a great Sunday!
