Tuesday is named after the Norse/Germanic god Tyr, a god of war. In Spanish, Tuesday is Martes, named after another god of war, Mars. It’s Mardi in French and Martendi in Italian. In German, the day is Dienstag, also named after Tyr.
It seems Tyr and Mars are locked in an eternal linguistic struggle for this particular day of the week. Most days of the week are split between Germanic/Norse gods and their Roman counterparts. Odin and Mercury fight over Wednesday. Thor and Jupiter spar on Thursdays. On Fridays, Freya and Venus do their dance.
Oddly, Saturday in English is named for the Roman god Saturn, while in many other European languages it translates to “day of the Sabbath”—German’s Samstag, or Samedi in French, or Sabado in Spanish. Meanwhile, Sunday is quite literally a day of the sun in English and German’s Sonntag, while dimanche (French) and domingo (Spanish) mean “day of the Lord.”
Of all the weekdays, only Monday seems to unite us linguistically. It means, of course, day of the moon, and it means the same thing in French (lundi) and Spanish (lunes) and German (montag).

SPOIL was a deceptively good starting guess. I thought with just a green ‘L’ I wasn’t off to much of a start, but it turns out just 57 words remained. MEDAL slashed that to just 8, and added a green ‘E’ to the mix. At this point I very nearly guessed REBEL because I just watched (and enjoyed) Rebel Ridge on Netflix, but for whatever stupid reason I decided to go with BEVEL. Oh well!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “rebel” originates from the Latin word “rebellis,” which is a compound of the prefix “re-“ (meaning “again” or “back”) and “bellum” (meaning “war”). So, “rebellis” literally means “waging war again” or “renewing war.” This term referred to someone who took up arms again after having been defeated or subdued.
From Latin, it passed into Old French as “rebelle” before entering Middle English around the 14th century as “rebel.” In English, it came to refer to someone who resists authority or control, particularly someone who rises in armed resistance against a government or ruler. The verb form (“to rebel”) followed the same trajectory.
