In an interesting move, Square Enix has announced a new high-end toy of the Weltall from the classic role-playing game Xenogears.
The reason this is curious, is that we have not only had a solid action figure of Weltall in the past but also of the imposing Weltall-Id. The latter is also something I reviewed a while back.
Those two previous figures were part of the Bring Arts toy line by Square Enix, with the original Weltall figure costing around $80.
This new Formism Act toy is something else entirely though, Again, supervised by the original mecha designer of Xenogears, that of Junya Ishigaki, it’s also been developed by those toy design masters at T-Rex.
Clocking in at around 20 cm in height, this new Weltall toy has more diecast than the previous figure and a new System-Id setup that is unique to this figure (shown above)
The sculpt, detailing and paint job also look more sophisticated, but there is one catch to all of this new excellence.
While the previous Weltall figure was not too expensive, this new Formism Act version comes in at 39,600 yen (or around $275).
That’s a hefty increase, but this is admittedly a bigger figure using more diecast and featuring more parts.
That said, it’s still a lot and I was genuinely surprised at the price hike. Although, it does look entirely amazing.
The new Formism Act Weltall is now open for pre-orders in Japan, and will be shipped out to customers in February of next year. You can also import the toy via those nice people at HobbyLink Japan.
The big question in all this though is whether Square Enix are gearing up to do some kind of HD remaster for Xenogears, as the toys are clearly showing there is a demand for it.
