Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and Addleshaw Goddard have emerged as the leading mergers and acquisitions (M&A) legal advisers in the retail sector by value and volume in 2024, according to GlobalData’s latest league table.
GlobalData, parent of the Retail Insight Network and a leading data and analytics company, ranked advisers by the value and volume of M&A deals on which they advised.
According to its financial deals database, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett secured the top spot by deal value by advising on $12.8bn worth of deals.
Addleshaw Goddard dominated deal volume by advising on a total of 16 deals during the year.
GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Simpson Thacher & Bartlett was the only adviser that managed to surpass $10bn mark in total deal value during 2024. Its involvement in the $8.3bn deal for the acquisition of 60% stake in Newland Commercial Management by consortium of investors was instrumental in securing the top spot by value during the year.
“Meanwhile, Addleshaw Goddard registered a fourfold jump in the total number of deals advised by it during 2024 compared to the previous year. Its ranking by volume also jumped from the 25th position in 2023 to the top position in 2024.”
In terms of deal value, White & Case secured the second spot, advising on transactions worth $6.4bn, followed by Cravath Swaine & Moore at $5.7bn, Willkie Farr & Gallagher at $5.4bn and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison at $4.6bn.
In deal volume, Kirkland & Ellis took second place, handling 15 deals, while White & Case, CMS, and Cuatrecasas each advised on 12 deals.
GlobalData’s league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory firm websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names.
To further ensure the robustness of the data, the company also seeks submissions of deals from leading advisers.
