Following a wait of four years, multiple Macross anime are finally coming to the US via Hulu.
In 2021, I reported that the various rights issues surrounding Macross had mostly been resolved. Like many, I assumed that we’d see those anime available on streaming services in a few months.
We also found out last year that not all of Macross would become available outside of Japan. The original Macross TV series and movie, Do You Remember Love?, are still landlocked in Japan.
The good news is that Hulu will apparently release the following Macross anime on January 13.
- Macross Zero
- Macross: Flash Back 2012
- Macross II: Lovers, Again
- Macross Plus
- Macross Plus Movie Edition
- Macross 7
- Macross 7: The Galaxy is Calling Me!
- Macross Dynamite 7
- Macross Fb7 Listen to My Song!
- Macross Frontier
- Macross Frontier: The False Songstress
- Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell
- Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time
- Macross Delta
- Macross Delta the Movie: Passionate Walkūre
- Macross Delta: Zettai LIVE!!!!!!
The Disney point is noteworthy because the original plan was to release these various Macross anime via Disney+ outside of Japan. This is because Disney+ handles the streaming of these Macross series in Japan.
However, as Hulu is part of Disney, it makes sense that these Macross anime would end up there, at least from a branding standpoint, as Hulu already hosts an enormous amount of anime content.
More recently, the excellent Macross Plus received a proper Blu-ray release in the US and Europe, which I reviewed if you are at all curious.
If you are interested in how Macross came about and the creative people that made it possible, then feel free to check out my interviews with Shoji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake. In addition, for Macross Plus, I also interviewed its director Shinichiro Watanabe and composer Yoko Kanno.
