If it seems like only a year since Apple announced a special-edition AirTag to celebrate Japanese new year, that’s because it is. That time, it was engraved with a jolly picture of a dragon. Now, for the upcoming Year of the Snake, there’s a delightful image of a winking serpent.
Before you try and snag one, let me manage your expectations a little. They’re only available in Japan, and the edition is limited to 50,000 of the little cuties. They’re part of the new year campaign in Japan, just announced by Apple and spotted by MacRumors.
The promotion also includes Apple gift cards of various values on products from Beats earbuds to Apple Watches.
Three iPhones are included in the offer, each with a gift card of up to ¥11,000 with the purchase. The iPhones are the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone SE. The latest iPhone 16 models are not included in the promotion.
And for the first 50,000 people to buy one of these iPhones, there’s also the Year of the Snake AirTag. It won’t be available for sale separately, which is how Apple routinely makes this offer.
The snake is the fourth consecutive special-edition AirTag. The 2022 tag was a tiger, 2023 a rabbit, this year a dragon and now a snake for 2025.
All have been adorably fun and unmistakably in the Animoji design style—clear and stark enough for simple, one-color engraving, but characterful, approachable and cheekily smile-inducing.
The offer has grown over the years: in January 2022, it ran for two days and there were only 20,000 Year of the Tiger AirTags to be had.
This time around, the offer runs for longer, from Friday, Jan. 2 through to Monday, Jan. 5. The gift cards range in value from ¥6,000 ($38) right up to ¥30,000 ($190) for the right MacBook Air. These figures are higher than the ones on offer in the first year of the promotion, too.
Unsurprisingly, the offers are only available in Japan, through the Japanese Apple website and instore.
