You know how it is, you’re doing your expenses and you just can’t find the receipt for the meal when you took three work companions out. I mean, it really was work, the company allows you to claim providing you have the itemized original, but it’s nowhere to be found.

ChatGPT’s latest image generator could come to your rescue — though your conscience may not care for the solution.

The thing is, as reported by Tech Radar, fake receipts are now easy to generate with ChatGPT. But they’re not perfect, so look out, cheaters.

“The fakes aren’t completely convincing if you know what to look for: they’re a little too clean, a little too CGI, and sometimes get the sums wrong (like in our example…). But they’re also easy to miss – and with a bit of fiddling you can make them look more realistic with creases and food stains,” the report says.

The example Tech Radar refers to is a beautifully printed piece of paper for the imaginary restaurant Taste Radar at the mouthwatering address of 2 Delicious Lane in London (no, dear reader, there’s no such street).

It’s not bad value, either, with the British staple fish and chips costing £14.95 ($19.25, not bad for London) and a glass of red wine for £7 ($9).

It all looks convincing, until you get to the total, which shows there’s a bit of a catch with doing this, in addition to it being fraudulent, I mean.

Do the math yourself and you’ll find it should be £101.28 but the receipt says £168.36. While you may be glad of the extra funds, your accounts department will surely spot the irregularity.

Tech Crunch did something similar and pointed out “a couple of dead giveaways that it was faked. For one, the total uses a comma instead of a period. For another, the math doesn’t add up. LLMs still struggle to do basic math, so this isn’t particularly surprising,” it said.

Tech Radar told Open AI about what it had been able to do and the company said it’s keeping an eye on trends like this, promising to “take action when we identify violations of our usage policies,” it said.

However, another OpenAI spokesperson pointed out that every cloud has a silver lining, They told TechCrunch that there was a positive use for fake receipts: “teaching people about financial literacy” in non-fraudulent situations.
