The California wildfires have devastated the state. Relief efforts are ongoing with many members of the entertainment community coming together for benefit events like concerts and comedy shows. For the team at Critical Role, they are going to do what they do best to raise money: play Dungeons & Dragons.

Critical Role announced a special live one-shot aimed at aiding wildfire recovery efforts in Los Angeles following the devastating fires that broke out earlier this month. The game will take place on Thursday, January 30 at 7PM PT / 10PM ET. It will be a live broadcast across all the show’s streaming platforms.

The company has already been able to contribute $30,000 from its emergency fund through its nonprofit arm Critical Role Foundation to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund to provide immediate support to those affected by the disaster. With the recovery efforts far from over, Critical Role is rallying its fans around the world, known as “Critters”, to come together and provide even more support for those in need.

Members of Critical Role have often used their fame to assist in charity efforts. Recently, Matt Mercer joined several actual play all stars for The Puppy Roll to support PetCo Love. Marisha Ray entered the ring in 2023 for Creator Clash 2 which benefitted several charities.

What began as a show highlighting the joy of playing Dungeons & Dragons with friends has created an entirely new genre of entertainment. Critical Role Foundation is one of many ways Critical Role ha expanded into new areas including TV shows, game publishing and more. It also lets the members of the company give back as hanks for an unusual path to fame.

The one-shot charity livestream is titled “Freaky Thursday” and will feature interactive elements that will likely turn it into a wild, chaotic story. The beloved characters from its third tabletop roleplaying game campaign known as Bells Hells will be the main characters of the story. They are played by Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey and Liam O’Brien, with Game Master Matthew Mercer.

Critters can donate or purchase rewards that directly shape the story. Each fundraising milestone reached will unlock unique surprises, including new allies, unexpected adversaries, or even character sheet swaps, ensuring an unpredictable and exciting adventure shaped entirely by the community’s contributions. Story elements with the most donations will take center stage in the adventure.

In addition to creating grants for charities who are currently providing on the ground aid throughout Los Angeles, 10% of each donation is stashed into an overall emergency fund. This allows Critical Role Foundation to send help quickly in the event of a future unforeseen natural emergency. Wildfires are nothing new to California but they will likely become more frequent and more intense.

The adventure will be streamed live on Critical Role’s membership service Beacon, as well as Critical Role’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Fans can continue to support Critical Role’s wildfire relief efforts through February 28th by donating directly to the Critical Role Foundation and purchasing CRF-branded merchandise through Critical Role’s online shop.
