Bungie has now slashed the price of all Destiny 1 content in a single bundle to $20, where yes, those servers are in fact still online despite the vast majority of the playerbase over on Destiny 2 the past seven years.
This conversation about a remaster began with a pretty innocuous comment from community manager DMG saying he was happy to “pass along the feedback” about a full-on Destiny 1 remastered content package, possibly with modern day QoL changes like say, mantling, for one, which it’s hard to believe the game never used to have.
While I get that it’s more than popular for old games to get remasters at this point, this makes less sense than most. Bungie has spent years porting large portions of Destiny 1 into Destiny 2 to the point where all that’s really left is…not much, frankly.
- Bungie has brought three raids from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2, Vault of Glass, Crota’s End and King’s Fall. They may be done doing this, leaving Wrath of the Machine on the table. But that’s the only one.
- Bungie has brought three strikes from Destiny 1, The Devil’s Lair, Fallen SABER and The Will of Crota.
- There are at least two dozen exotic weapons from Destiny 1 in Destiny 2 at this point, where there are extremely few iconic D1 weapons even left to port. I can’t even count how many legendary weapons have come over at this point on top of that.
- Destiny 2 has ported most of the Cosmodrome and all of the Moon from Destiny 1. The remaining major zones, Venus and Mars, were not its best.
- In one week Bungie is about to port over a super-upgraded version of Prison of Elders from Destiny 1.
I just don’t quite get the point. Even with some QoL features, Bungie is not going to completely rebalance the game with say, Destiny 2 subclass kits, nor modern versions of weapons and armor with way more perks and features. I love Destiny 1 as much as anyone, but a combination of people looking at it with rose glasses and most of the best Destiny 1 content in Destiny 2 already, I don’t think this would be worth the time and energy.
And let’s be honest, Bungie does not have the time or energy. They have the entire staff, which has suffered hundreds of layoffs, working on future Destiny 2 content, which is already shrinking, plus Marathon, which is likely to miss its 2025 release date. If this idea was to happen it would probably need to be wholly outsourced.
I’m not saying I’d never play it, I just don’t think logistically this makes much sense on any level.
