Well, I have to say, the Destiny 2 community has needed a good laugh the past few months or so, and boy, this is it.

Players were confused to log in after the launch of Act 2 to find that Rite of the Nine had gone live, the upcoming, well-presented context/teaching dungeon mode that would reprise a number of weapons and all around, sounded like a lot of fun. It was supposed to launch in Act 3.

For a few minutes, players wondered if this was some sort of stealth launch to surprise and delight fans. And while it has done that, not in the way Bungie would have intended. This is 100% a horrific, hilarious mistake.

Your first clue was there was no pop-up announcing this. Your second clue was that there are two Xur Treasure Horde icons where one you cannot launch and all. The third is that players are dropping weapons that an entirely unfinished and un-skinned.

I cannot remember the last time I laughed out loud during some sort of Destiny 2 content drop, but this was certainly one of those occasions. Players are quickly farming up these weapons but where things go from here? That’s anyone’s guess.

This does not strike me as some sort of “just leave it Bungie, this is funny” type situation like a Trace Rifle doing too much damage in the Crucible. This is deeply bad screw-up and the activity is broken in multiple ways and is pumping out comically uncooked weapons. This is what happen when you lay off large chunks of your QA and technical teams, I suppose.

So no, they will not leave it, but there are multiple ways to deal with it. There could just be a patch to take it out and I guess…remove that specific loot somehow. Or if this is more of a technical mess (it certainly seems like a massive technical mess) they may have to do an entire rollback of the game.

This has only happened a few times in Destiny history, and I have not seen anything like this happen in Destiny history, so I’d say it’s on the table. The warning about a rollback is that anything you do from around the patch until the rollback may not save. That could be story quests, loot, all of it. So even if everyone doesn’t want to hop into bugged dungeons, doing the normal stuff like the new seasonal activity and Guardian Games and farming for actual guns there, that may not be the best idea until we know what’s going to happen. I’m currently on pause, just scrolling through Twitter and laughing.

I will post any updates on the situation here.

Update from Bungie, no rollback, potentially:
