The First Descendant teased Season 1 yesterday with a 15 second spot promising an August 20 release date. Then they…lifted an embargo that was supposed to be up Monday, unleashing a lot more information about the season, including a full trailer that has the funniest few opening seconds I’ve ever seen.
That snow-shaking person in question is Hailey, the new ice-based sniper hero that will be the new character to arrive as that season launches, and like other hero-based games, it seems we will be getting one a season, plus a new Ultimate. Besides Hailey, here is what else is coming in The First Descendant season 1, though first, we will start with the official Hailey description:
“Rising from a supply soldier in the guerilla unit is Hailey, a legendary sniper. Armed with an anti-material sniper rifle, sub-zero bullets, and a storm snare, Hailey eliminates enemies with a single, devastating shot. Her unique ability to lower her body temperature and emit cold air gives her a chilling edge in battle.”
And now the rest:
Ultimate Freyna: This is the Ultimate version of what is usually the third hero players will get in the game, the poisonous Freyna. We don’t know what her exclusive powers will be, but we did get a look at her in the trailer. Her Ultimate version also comes with new story for her character exploring her history and triggering this Ultimate transformation.
New Invasion Dungeon: This is something that “occurs randomly” in two existing dungeons, where players will have the choice to switch to an entirely new Invasion that rewards more rewards for faster clears.
Inversion Reinforcement: This will be a new system that “unlocks new potentials and abilities” within characters where you will be able to gain addition powers in “hunting, attribute, recovery, survival and seasons” that will progress throughout the season. I swear this game still has a lot of translation issues with these promo materials, as I’m not clear on what this means, exactly, or if it’s season-specific and will go away when it’s done.
New Boss: This would be the Death Stalker, a new, more powerful Colossus that will push the fight beyond Gluttony and is poison-based. There are some hints this may come with a story component but again, it’s not fully clear.
New Weapons: There’s an assault rifle called Excava which charges up a power shot as you attack enemies, and it’s in the battle pass. Frost Watcher is a scout rifle that you will get in season 1 content and is very much meant for the ice Descendants, Viessa and Hailey.
There is also some tease about a “mysterious trade agent” that will appear in the game. The first thing I thought of is Destiny’s Xur, but we’ll see exactly what they mean.
So, I am not clear on how at least some of these things are going to work, as Invasion Dungeons and Inversion Reinforcement aren’t as clear as they could be, but no doubt the main pursuit of the season will be Hailey and Ultimate Freyna for most players. Season 1 of The First Descendant launches August 29.
