Today, Square Enix announced that it’ll be replacing the PC port of the original Final Fantasy VII on Steam with a new version. However, Square Enix didn’t exactly say when the change will take place, or what the new version entails.

The company was quite vague on its announcement, only providing the following details:

  • When the new version launches, the old version will be called Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition, and those who already have access to it will continue to do so. However, it will no longer be available for purchase on the Steam Store. The new version will simply just be called Final Fantasy VII.
  • Those who’ve already purchased Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition will get the new Final Fantasy VII at no extra cost, and users can access both versions.
  • Unfortunately, save data will not be compatible between the two versions, meaning that 2013 Edition saves won’t be able to work on the new version, and vice versa.

So, there’s no release date. If you want to still the 2013 Edition, you should go ahead and buy it now before it’s too late.

Since Square Enix didn’t say what exactly would be included in the new version, a Reddit user suggested that it could be the Windows PC Edition that’s currently exclusive on that platform. This version natively includes features such as Japanese language support and being able to speed up the game up to 3x, and the ability to turn battle encounters off. It seems like a real upgrade, but if you’d like a more authentic experience similar to the original, you should (once again) purchase the 2013 Edition while you still can.

In other related news, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was just released for Nintendo Switch 2 this month, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is reportedly coming later this year to the handheld.
