HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A former AEW performer made a surprise debut at WWE’s final event before WrestleMania 42
  • The character behind the face paint has a cult following that could translate into major merchandise sales
  • A real-life friendship with a current WWE star may have played a role in the signing

As many suspected, the content of the mysterious crate WWE had been teasing for weeks was former AEW star Danhausen.

While Danhausen’s arrival in WWE wasn’t as highly anticipated as Chris Jericho, fans who fell in love with his wrestling-mime gimmick on the indies and in AEW were happy to see him revealed as the newest star in WWE.

Unfortunately, most fans at the United Center on Saturday weren’t thrilled with his arrival or presentation. Danhausen and his band of mimes were booed mercilessly.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Real name: Donovan Danhausen
  • Age: 35 (born August 17, 1990, in Detroit, Michigan)
  • Character: Self-described “very nice, very evil” comedy-horror persona — think Conan O’Brien possessed by a demon
  • Signature look: Black-and-white horror face paint (trademarked — believed to be the first wrestler to trademark his physical appearance), red and black cape, jar of teeth
  • AEW tenure: January 2022 – February 2026
  • AEW highlights: “Hookhausen” tag team with HOOK; aligned with Orange Cassidy and Best Friends
  • ROH accolade: Best New Star award (2020)
  • Pro debut: October 18, 2013
  • Finisher: “Goodnighthausen” — a GTS variant involving a jar of teeth
  • Catchphrases: “Very nice, very evil” and “Love that Danhausen” (both trademarked)

The Gimmick, Explained

Danhausen is unlike anything else on the WWE roster. He’s a self-proclaimed evil entity who is simultaneously too polite to actually be threatening. He refers to himself in the third person, adds “-hausen” to the end of words, chastises people for swearing despite claiming to be demonic, and “curses” opponents by pointing at them with both hands — curses that never seem to work on cue but always seem to catch up to his targets eventually.

He carries a jar of human teeth to the ring. He dances the Pee-wee Herman dance to “Tequila” mid-match. He has been described by the New York Times as “a ghoul, maybe, or some kind of gremlin.”

It sounds absurd. It absolutely works.

It’s no secret he debuted after Punk successfully defending his World Heavyweight Championship. The two men have a strong relationship from their days in AEW.

How He Got Here

Danhausen spent 13 years building his character across the independent circuit and Ring of Honor before AEW signed him in January 2022. His peak AEW moment was the Hookhausen pairing with HOOK in mid-2022, but a torn pectoral muscle in 2023 derailed his momentum.

He wasn’t booked on AEW television for most of 2024 and all of 2025 despite being cleared to wrestle. He requested his release in August 2025; AEW declined and added injury time to his contract instead.

That extended deal finally expired on February 27, 2026 — literally one day before Elimination Chamber. Fightful confirmed his removal from the AEW roster page, and Ringside News reported he was immediately available for a WWE appearance.

Why WWE Wanted Him

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer put it plainly: Danhausen could “get over as a cult figure early and would likely sell a lot of merchandise.” There’s no character remotely like him on the current WWE roster — the comedy-horror lane is completely open.

The face paint, the cape, the teeth jar — it’s all visually distinctive and, critically, toyetic. WWE’s merchandise machine should have a field day.

There’s also a personal connection. Danhausen and CM Punk are well-documented friends, and the fact that this debut happened in Chicago — Punk’s hometown — during an event I previewed earlier today adds a layer that feels intentional.

Hopefully, Danhausen’s next appearance will go over a little better.
