Fortnite is doing something rather interesting, past just another collaboration with another Marvel movie, this time, Thunderbolts.
A crossover has just been revealed with two of the movie’s characters, in what at least appears to be a more detailed comic book style than we’ve seen previously, and one that frankly, looks a lot cooler than any before it, deemed a “pen and ink” style.
However, it’s not quite the movie Thunderbolts, even though this is being branded as a crossover with that film. This is not the Bucky Barnes from Thunderbolts, this is The Winter Soldier from Captain America: Brave New World, at least assuming Bucky doesn’t fully suit up in this exact way again.
Then, we have White Widow, Yelena Belova, taking up the mantle from her sister, but I’m not sure if she has fully graduated to this codename by Thunderbolts, and she’s definitely not wearing that outfit. It’s not even white in this movie, and the last time we saw her in white was the Black Widow movie. Additionally, in an era where Fortnite is stellar and using real-world faces for its own skins, this absolutely does not look like Florence Pugh.
So it’s a crossover with the characters, but not the versions of them from the upcoming movie, and not looking like the actors who play them (hard to tell with Bucky’s mask, but still). They’re comic versions. I’m not quite sure why this is the way this happened (Fortnite also did something weird recently with The Walking Dead comic Negan as opposed to the show-based Rick, Michonne and Daryl skins they already did), but hey, they do look really cool, and this new animation style is amazing.

Yes, these skins are free, technically. Or they can be. These are being wound into the Thunderbolts Cup, where you will be able to earn versions of both Bucky and Yelena through the tournament. This will happen on Wednesday April 30 at 8 PM ET. You will no doubt be able to buy these skins in the store as well. That may happen as soon as April 25.
Seems cool to me. I’d love to get a Sentry skin as well in addition to these, but given that he’s sort of a big reveal in the movie (we haven’t seen his full costume yet) I am not really going to expect that. I am also looking forward to seeing more skins in this pen and ink style from here, and how those are going to look while actually playing.
