Somehow, Fortnite has added Mephisto to its universe before the MCU has, despite a recent name-drop in Agatha All Along. But it’s not just that he’s a new skin and NPC, Epic has cleverly coded in some interactions between characters that he has a comic book history with.

These have been chronicled by a few players, and the list is ongoing. I found these via Fortnite News. The lines are:

  • To Doctor Doom: “Your mother’s screams echo across my realm”
  • To Doctor Strange: “A sorcerer supreme is no match for Mephisto”
  • To Thor: “Your inner goodness radiates once more. Repulsive.”
  • To Scarlet Witch: “Wanda. How are you boys?”
  • To Shuri: “I will not lose to another Black Panther.”
  • To Ghost Rider: “Are you happy with the bargain you’ve made?”

There are some other interactions with Fortnite-only original characters, namely some of the spookier ones like Peely Bone, Knightmare, Pumpkin King and Knightmare. Also…Edward Scissorhands, for some reason. I guess because he’s new.

Some players are disappointed that another brutal Mephisto storyline wasn’t referenced. The game’s Spider-Man skin does not have an interaction with him where in the comics, Peter gives up his marriage (their entire married history is erased) in order to save Aunt May from death. Readers were…not really fans of this development. The idea was supposed to be to return Peter to his “roots” by making him unattached again, but it felt like a clumsy retcon. Still, it’s not mentioned here in Fortnite. Maybe even Epic wants to forget that happened.

As for Mephisto elsewhere, it was a long-running theory when WandaVision first premiered that Mephisto was hiding around every corner, but in the end it turned out that Agatha Harkness, not Mephisto, was the main villain of that series. Now in her own show, Agatha All Along, Mephisto was briefly mentioned but we have no indication he’ll end up being part of this story. It’s not impossible, and Marvel may be going down the road to a “supernatural” section of the MCU that brings him in eventually, but I sort of doubt that’s going to be happening right. Regardless, Agatha All Along is going great without him, and I’m not sure introducing him in the last four episodes of the miniseries, with no second season planned, would make all that much sense. But we’ll see. For now, he’s just in Fortnite.
