Bungie is doing a lot to encourage people to log back in at the tail end of this episode of Destiny 2 here, and they’ve done something rather cool in that regard this weekend.

Currently in the Tower, Xur is selling Gjallarhorn. Well, “selling,” it’s free. Free as in previously, the only way to get the rocket launcher was buying the 30th Anniversary Pack for $30 and doing a quest there. Now, anyone can get it.

Why the generosity? Well, this is the tenth anniversary of the time Xur sold Gjallarhorn during the second of week that Destiny 1 launched, a weapon that would go on to definite the boss meta of that entire year, and then some, due to its extreme power that was wildly beyond all its competition.

But Xur selling it the second week meant that loads of people skipped it, as Strange Coins were hard to come by back then, and an exotic in the heavy slot, which you would rarely use, seemed like a waste. Ten years later, that’s still a community meme now. After that, you could get Gjallarhorn as a wild drop (remember those days?) though eventually he did sell it again later, which is when most of the rest of the community got it.

Gjallarhorn is not quite the monster it once was, balanced along with most other powerful heavies these days, but certainly useful in rocket-focused meta periods, granting all allies Wolfpack Rounds. It’s certainly had some time in the sun in D2, as well. I believe he will sell the catalyst for the weapon, though I’m not 100% sure about that. If not, you would have to run the dungeon to get the catalyst instead.

This is fun, a neat little homage to the OG game and a bit of generosity when so much in Destiny 2 is hidden behind disjointed paid content. Though if you think this is going to be a regular thing with Bungie throwing formerly paid weapons to Xur for free, I would not hold your breath, as this is very much a special occasion.

Xur is in his new Tower spot, and you have until reset on Tuesday to grab Gjallarhorn from him if you don’t already have it.
