Google Photos will soon start automatically creating short clips from your stored videos, according to a new report. The feature will complement the existing range of Google Photos “creations” that generate new content from the media stored in your library.
As discovered by long-time software sleuth Assemble Debug, the yet-to-be-released feature will create the clips, called “Cinematic Moments” by “adding a slow motion effect to your video” and is referred to in the code of the latest version of the Google Photos Android app. The feature isn’t currently enabled for end users, so we don’t know precisely how the slow-motion clips will look. However, you can expect Google to deploy some clever AI-based analysis of the video to determine which sections of the video are worth singling out as Cinematic Moments.
Like Cinematic Photos, But For Video – A Perfect Scenario For Gemini AI
Google Photos already has a similar Cinematic Photos feature that animates still images with a subtle 3D perspective-shifting effect. However, automatically producing similar creations based on video could prove more valuable. You can tell at a glance whether a photo is worth preserving or turning into a shareable memory, but with video you have to watch each clip all the way through to find any exceptional moments. This process could prove hugely time-consuming for a human, but it’s the perfect task for Google’s Gemini AI, which can analyze entire videos in one go and pick out the most interesting parts automatically.
For example, In the example video below, Gemini 1.5 Pro finds the moment a piece of paper is removed from a person’s pocket in a 44-minute video. It then reads and processes the information written on that piece of paper. Similar technologies will no doubt enable Google to perform similar tricks with video stored in Google Photos libraries.
Cinematic Moments will join Cinematic Photos in the list of other Google Photos creations, including
Animations, which combine several photos into an animated clip
Collages, which combine a selection of pictures into a large collage in various layouts
Movies: that generate slideshows with customizable music and titles
You can find yours by searching your Google Photos library with the word “creations” or clicking this link in your browser. Any creations you choose to save will count against your storage allowance.
Google Photos Cinematic Moments Code Revealed
The code, as discovered by Assemble Debug, reads as follows:
- name=”photos_creations_photo_image_cinematic_moment_video”>Cinematic Moment
- name=”photos_creations_image_cinematic_moment_video_tooltip”> Created by adding a slow motion effect to your video
As you can see, little is known about the feature other than that it will deploy a slow-motion effect. We will have to wait until the feature is enabled to find out more.
