Netflix has introduced another new original movie, one that has shot straight to number one despite…terrible critic and audience reviews. Sigh. Such is the way of things, it seems. The Deliverance has replaced Incoming, a horror film surpassing the raunchy R-rated teen comedy right after its debut.

The Deliverance at least has an interesting cast in the form of Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Omar Epps and Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin. It’s also directed by Lee Daniels who most famously directed Precious back in 2009, and he’s been nominated for two Oscars.

The bad news is…it’s bad. The Deliverance has a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and it’s no fan favorite with 56% audience scores and a 4.9/10 on IMDB. Here’s the official description for it:

“Single parent Ebony Jackson moves her family to a new home for a fresh start, but something evil already lives there. Inspired by terrifying true events.”

Looking it up, the movie is inspired by the “Ammons haunting case” or the “Demon House” which allegedly occurred in Gary, Indiana in 2011. A family reported supernatural occurrences in their house and at one point hired priests to perform multiple exorcisms. Many, of course, were skeptical of the claims and believe the family was delusional or hallucinating.

Whatever the case, it does not seem like things have gone right here attempting to adapt the film for screen. One critic calls it a “floundering Exorcist wannabe.”

As for the rest of the list, Incoming, after a little while on top, has sunk down to #2, once again being a film I have heard exactly zero people talk about, as seems to be the case with many Netflix original movies. But as the #1 streaming service in the US, tons and tons of people are watching these when they are put this high up on the list. The Union, which lasted a long time on top, has sunk to #4 on the list, and a documentary about college football sign stealing is at #5. I won’t say which school because it is definitely not my alma mater…

Almost everything else is the usual collection of kids movies which includes Super Mario Bros. which looks like it will not have left the top 10 list in an entire year, if this keeps up.

In any case, Incoming did not review well, and now The Deliverance is reviewing poorly too. Skip these Netflix originals and find some actual classics on the service, because there are plenty.
