Andy Robertson is a Liverpool icon. The Scottish left back has won two Premier League titles during his eight seasons with the Anfield club and was also a key part of the team that won the Champions League in 2019 and played in two more finals. Robertson, however, could soon depart Merseyside.

Reports claim Tottenham Hotspur is advancing in talks to sign Robertson whose contract at Liverpool is up at the end of the season. The 31-year-old has lost his starting spot to Milos Kerkez recently and could make the move to North London in search of regular soccer before the 2026 World Cup.

For Spurs, the signing of Robertson would also make some sense. While the left back wouldn’t solve all, or even most, of the problems Thomas Frank’s team is currently suffering from, his experience could help a dressing room that appears to be seriously lacking in natural leadership qualities.

Frank is attempting to reshape the culture at Spurs. This is being made more difficult by the disappointing results being achieved on the pitch, but the Dane needs players within the dressing room to help him reset the culture. This is where someone like Robertson could be a valuable addition.

On the pitch, Robertson could also improve Tottenham as a team. Djed Spence has struggled to string together a consistent run of matches this season due to injury, meaning Robertson will likely see regular game time in North London. Even at 31, the Scot might be an upgrade on Spence.

“I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that,” said Robertson when recently asked about his Liverpool contract and the prospect of staying at the Anfield club beyond the end of the 2025/26 season when he will become a free agent.

Spurs has already signed Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid this month, giving Frank another option in central midfield. The North London club is also being linked with wide forwards following the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace earlier in the January transfer window.

A new left back might not have been at the top of most supporters’ shopping list, but Robertson represents a market opportunity and Spurs would be foolish not to sign the Scotland international while he is available. On and off the field, he might be exactly what Tottenham Hotspur needs.
