It seems every day, a new and interesting detail about the Global Fight League (GFL) is revealed. On Thursday, the league’s official X account shared its weight classes with higher weight limits across the board.
Here is a look at the weight limits for all of the GFL’s divisions:
- Women’s Atomweight – 110 pounds
- Women’s Strawweight – 125 pounds
- Women’s Bantamweight – 140 pounds
- Men’s Bantamweight – 145 pounds
- Men’s Featherweight – 155 pounds
- Men’s Lightweight – 165 pounds
- Men’s Welterweight – 180 pounds
- Men’s Middleweight – 200 pounds
- Men’s Light Heavyweight – 225 pounds
- Men’s Heavyweight – 265 pounds
According to the post, the purpose of the weight-class limits that differ from the UFC is to reduce “extreme weight-cutting by increasing weight class limits, ensuring athletes maintain optimal health and peak performance while minimizing injuries. This approach helps fighters stay healthier and better prepared to deliver thrilling performances for fans.”
This measure seems most helpful at women’s bantamweight, men’s lightweight, men’s middleweight, and men’s light heavyweight, where there are either larger gaps between divisions in the UFC or, in the case of the women’s bantamweight division, no higher weight class to fit into.
We’ll see how this all unfolds once action in the GFL gets underway. The promotion will hold its inaugural draft on January 24, and we will soon see the team-based promotion take form.
