Tuesday is one of the most curious days in terms of why it’s called what it’s called. Some days are more obvious than others. Monday is named after the moon. Sunday after the sun. Saturday is named after Saturn—one of the most important gods in ancient Rome. Thursday after Thor, who is not just a Marvel superhero. Wednesday is named for Odin, another infamous Norse deity. Friday continues the Norse tradition, named for Freya. Tuesday is named for Tyr, a Norse god of war and probably the least famous of all these day-name gods. Curiously, in romance languages a different god of war is named: Mardi in French, Martes in Spanish, both named after Mars.

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. Let’s solve today’s, shall we?

Today’s Strands Breakdown
I actually thought of UMBRELLA instantly when I saw the theme today, but weirdly enough didn’t see the word on the grid right away. I found HOOD first and then UMBRELLA. I filled in the rest of the top of the grid before snagging the spangram. After that, it wasn’t hard though I admit that GAITERS through me for a loop. Even though all the other words were solved I got very stuck on that one!
