There were many announcements at Netflix Geeked Week this past week, so many that I’m still catching up, but there is one that stands out above most. That would be the news that Netflix is reteaming with CDPR for another journey into the world of Cyberpunk 2077.

This would be a follow-up to, but not a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which by reviews alone can be considered one of the best shows Netflix has ever produced. It has a 100% critic score and a 95% audience score with thousands of reviews in. That’s the same level as Arcane, with its own 100%/96% score, and about to return for a second season. The announcement was…very brief and light on details, with only this video showing up:

CDPR has indicated that they wanted to do another Cyberpunk series with Netflix, but always said it would not be another season of Edgerunners and if you’ve seen Edgerunners, well, spoilers, everyone ends up dead, more or less.

One open question here is if CDPR and Netflix will be working with TRIGGER, the animation studio that made Edgerunners so memorable. In the past, yes, CDPR has said it has more projects planned with TRIGGER. This is from October 2023 from CCO Michał Nowakowski:

“Yes, we do have plans. That’s why we have started cooperating with Anonymous Content. We want things to happen. A lot is happening, a lot is planned. TRIGGER was in 2018 but [Edgerunners] started in 2022, so for a number of years we did not speak about this because it wasn’t ready. There are plans we’d rather keep quiet until there is something to speak about, until there is really something to discuss, some concrete announcement.

“What’s also important is that TRIGGER, our partner, has certain rules for announcing projects and we have to be compliant with this.”

It’s that last line that may be the answer to this, that TRIGGER may not be able to announce that it’s joining the project at this point due to whatever rules it has in place, and just because it’s not mentioned in the official reveal here, does not mean it’s not going to work on this project. But that said, with not even so much as a year teased, this feels like a 2026/2027 project at the earliest.

Whenever it gets here, it stands to reason it will be excellent, given how Edgerunners went. I’d watch infinite stories set in Night City, whether in games or TV or movies (and yes, a live-action Cyberpunk series is coming too).
