The modern world is in such a hurry and time waits for no one, especially when there is a big project on the go, like editing a new video or backing up a huge selection of digital images.
Other World Computing has announced its latest weapon in the storage wars with the launch of the new Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSD. Due to start shipping in October, the SSD is designed for Mac and PC devices with Thunderbolt or USB4 ports with speeds exceeding 6000MB/s, making it up to twice as fast as Thunderbolt 4 and USB4.
Larry O’Connor is the founder and CEO at OWC and he explained about the new SSD: “Intel’s innovative Thunderbolt 5 technology sets a new standard for performance and simple connectivity, and OWC’s Envoy Ultra SSD is a perfect example of how this technology can be harnessed to meet the needs of today’s most demanding users leveraging the full potential of Thunderbolt 5 but also opens up new possibilities for professionals and creatives alike.”
As well as speeds of more than 6000MB/s, which is twice as fast as Thunderbolt 4 and USB4, the new drive will work with Macs, PCs, iPad Pros, Chromebooks and Surface devices, although maximum speeds are dependent on whether the host machine has a Thunderbolt 5 port, although backward compatibility means the SSD will work with previous Thunderbolt iterations.
The rugged Envoy Ultra is water and dust-resistant plus it’s crushproof. As well as being bus-powered using its built-in Thunderbolt cable, The Envoy Ultra is silent thanks to its fanless, heat-dissipating, aluminum design.
Also launching alongside the Envoy Ultra is the OWC Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) Cable. It’s a high-performance cable designed to deliver the full potential of Thunderbolt 5 speeds, offering up to 80Gb/s of bi-directional data speed and up to 120Gb/s for higher display bandwidth needs. The new cable is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4 and USB-C devices.
Pricing & Availability: The new Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 SSD will be available in 2.0TB and 4.0TB capacities for $399.99 and $599.99 respectively. It is available now for pre-order and will start shipping in late October. Meanwhile, the OWC Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) Cables are available immediately in lengths of 0.3m, 0.8m, and 1.0m for $22.99, $27.99 and $39.99, respectively.
