The Boys is bowing out after five seasons, though not abandoning the universe with one spin-off rolling and another one to come. Now we have an update on when season 5 of The Boys may get here, based on the shooting schedule that’s just been revealed.
Collider reports that The Boys season 5 starts shooting on November 25. That is, of course, pretty far away from when it wrapped up season 4 on July 18, but we know what the release date might be based on past shooting schedules.
We’ll use the most recent one as an example. Season 4 of The Boys started shooting on August 22, 2022. Season 4 was then released on June 13, 2024. So that’s 22 months, nearly two years between seasons.
Unlike some shows, The Boys did not start filming while the current season was airing, waiting five months instead. So if it starts filming on November 25, 2024, 22 months from that would be September of 2026. That would mean it would be over two years between seasons 4 and 5, on the high end of things even in this stretched-out streaming era release cycle. Some shows hit 3 full years, but most try to get around 18 months. Only a handful of shows are still able to get out yearly like Slow Horses or The Bear.
The good news is that in between seasons 4 and 5 of The Boys, we are getting a new season of Gen V, which will be some time in 2025, the “empty” year of The Boys content, which is one of the reasons the show was concocted in the first place. That season will be a bit delayed itself due to the tragic death of star Chance Perdomo, 27, who died this past year, and the season had to be rewritten as a result.
The other spin-off is The Boys: Mexico, with Diego Luna, post-Andor, and Gael Garcia Bernal. That does not have a release date at all, and it stands to reason that may not start up until after The Boys season 5 airs.
In the end, it’s looking like it will be seven years to get 5 years of The Boys out. Could be worse, but these gaps are getting longer over time. Maybe production could move faster this time around, fully outside the pandemic, but we’ll have to see. For now, late 2026 seems like the best bet, so just get ready for the (arguably better) Gen V season 2 instead.
