Storage specialist TerraMaster is best known for its range of NAS devices, but the company has just announced a high-speed aluminum enclosure for M.2 NVMe SSDs. The D1 SSD Pro offers up to 80Gbps of bandwidth and has been designed specifically for video editors, Mac enthusiasts, mobile professionals or anyone who needs speedy storage with elite-level performance.

The D1 SSD Pro is an 80Gbps Thunderbolt 5-compatible M.2 NVMe enclosure for professional creators, Mac power users and anyone working with high-performance mobile workflows. The enclosure can deliver real-world transfer speeds of up to 7,061MB/s in a silent and fanless chassis made of aluminum.

Engineered to take full advantage of the expanded bandwidth offered by the Thunderbolt 5 standard, the D1 SSD Pro DAS is Direct Attached Storage device capable of transferring a 6GB file in around a second, making it among the fastest portable storage solutions currently on the market.

Thunderbolt 5 Compatible

The enclosure is aimed at demanding applications like 8K and 4K video editing, high-resolution photography, plus large-scale data handling where sustained throughput and low latency are vital. I have tried out the D1 SSD Pro with one of my fastest NVMe SSDs and managed to get a write speed of 3,029MB/s which compares favorably with my Mac mini’s internal SSD. I don’t have a Thunderbolt 5 port on my Mac, but I imagine that with a faster SSD even higher speeds are possible.

At its core, the D1 SSD Pro has an Intel-certified dual-chip architecture that pairs the Intel JHL9480 Thunderbolt controller with the JMS583 USB bridge. This configuration enables native compatibility with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 3, while maintaining full backward support for USB4 and USB 3.x standards, ensuring stable performance across Macs, Windows PCs, tablets and other host devices.

Supporting PCIe 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs, the D1 SSD Pro can handle single-drive capacities up to 8TB. When paired with high-performance drives such as the Samsung 990 Pro, testing shows read speeds reaching 7,061MB/s and write speeds up to 6,816MB/s, marking a significant leap beyond traditional 40Gbps Thunderbolt enclosures.

Look, No Fans!

The enclosure is housed in a CNC-machined case made from aerospace-grade aluminum designed for efficient passive cooling. An expanded thermal surface area eliminates the need for active fans, allowing the D1 SSD Pro to operate in complete silence even during sustained workloads, making it suitable for use in studios, edit suites and on-set production environments.

The D1 SSD Pro is also designed to pair with the latest Apple silicon, including M4 Pro and Max MacBook Pro systems, Mac mini and Mac Studio, as well as select Windows laptops built on Intel Core Ultra 200 processors equipped with Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Early benchmarks demonstrate a boost over previous-generation enclosures, with stronger sustained throughput during prolonged transfers. Weighing 300g and constructed as a single and rugged aluminum unit, the device is durable and portable.

The enclosure draws power directly over USB-C, with active power consumption rated at 8.1 watts. The enclosure supports macOS and Windows 11 using common file systems including APFS, NTFS, exFAT, and EXT4.

Pricing and Availability:

The TerraMaster D1 SSD Pro is available now from Amazon and is priced at $249.99 / £203.99. It is also available on Terra-Master.com.

Tech Specs:

  • M.2 2280 NVMe slot: 1 x PCIe 4.0 x 4.
