Amazon is ending its “Prime Try Before You Buy” clothing program on Friday, Jan. 31.

“Prime Try Before You Buy” allowed members to select six items from a collection of luxury, staple and Amazon-owned brands and only pay for what they kept for more than seven days.

However, technological updates and Amazon’s efforts to cut costs have led to the cancellation of the program.

“Given the combination of Try Before You Buy only scaling to a limited number of items and customers increasingly using our new AI-powered features like virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts to make sure they find the right fit, we’re phasing out the Try Before You Buy option, effective January 31, 2025,” a spokesperson told CNBC.

“Prime Try Before You Buy” allowed members to select six items from a collection of luxury, staple and Amazon-owned brands and only pay for what they kept for more than seven days.

The service, which was previously called “Prime Wardrobe”, was first rolled out in 2017 and officially offered to paid members in 2018.

It worked similarly to a growing number of subscription-based clothing rental companies such as Stitch Fix, Rent the Runway and Nuuly.

While the specific service will no longer be offered, Amazon will still offer Prime members free returns for eligible products that weigh less than 50 pounds and are received in new and unused condition for up to 30 days after purchase.

The canceled program comes after the company laid off 200 staffers from its corporate offices.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the job eliminations and stated that the company is restructuring its North America Stores team to enhance efficiency and innovation.
