Note: Make sure to complete today’s NYT Connections before reading further! We’ll be getting into spoilers for today’s game pretty quickly. If you need some help to complete the grid, you can find my NYT Connections hints and answers column for today on my author page (I’ll update this with a direct link when I can).

Hey there, Connectors! Welcome to my deeper dive into today’s NYT Connections answers. The idea behind this is to help clear things up for anyone who isn’t sure how today’s groups fit together.

I’m going to assume that a) you know how to play NYT Connections and b) you’ve already beaten today’s game. If I’ve missed any red herrings or misunderstood something, let me know via email, Bluesky or Discord. I don’t typically look at X or check the comments here.

We’re going straight into spoiler territory here. So, consider this your one and only warning.

Here are today’s NYT Connections answers explained (and any red herrings I spot) for Monday, November 3:

Today’s NYT Connections Answers Explained

NYT Connections – Yellow Group

🟨 Yellow group — things that are red (CLOWN NOSE, FIRE ENGINE, MARASCHINO CHERRY, STOP SIGN)

Straightforward enough. These are all nouns. They are red things. At least they’re traditionally red. Some FIRE ENGINEs are yellow, largely for visibility reasons.

NYT Connections – Green Group

🟩 Green group – things filled with air (BALLOON ANIMAL, BOUNCY CASTLE, WATER WINGS, WHOOPEE CUSHION)

A BALLOON ANIMAL is a modelling balloon that has been shaped to look like an animal. I’m fairly confident I could make a snake from a long balloon.

A BOUNCY CASTLE is also known as a bounce house. It’s a large inflatable object that kids (and grown ups) jump around on. They’re very fun.

WATER WINGS are inflatable devices placed on the arms of novice swimmers to help keep them afloat.

A WHOOPEE CUSHION is a practical joke device. The idea is that you inflate it, place it on a seat and wait for an unsuspecting person to sit on it. As the device deflates, it imitates a fart sound. Cue much laughter and maybe a little embarrassment.

NYT Connections – Blue Group

🟦 Blue group — things with a lot of pieces (JIGSAW PUZZLE, LEGO SET, LITE-BRITE, PICK-UP STICKS)

A JIGSAW PUZZLE comprises a set of many unique, interlocking pieces. When assembled correctly, they reveal an image of some kind.

A LEGO SET is a collection of interlocking plastic bricks that one uses to construct larger objects. Some of these sets are designed to be built in a certain way and come with instructions. Others encourage builders to let their imaginations run wild. Just don’t somehow confuse Lego with a WHOOPEE CUSHION and place some bricks on a seat for someone to sit on. Yikes.

A LITE-BRITE is a toy that first emerged in the 1960s. You place colored pegs (the pieces referenced in this blue category) into holes on a board to create a design. Press a button to power on the board and the pegs light up.

PICK-UP STICKS is a game that involves dropping a pile of sticks onto a surface. The aim is to pick up sticks without disturbing the others. Whoever collects the most sticks or earns the most points (the sticks are often color-coded) wins.

NYT Connections – Purple Group

🟪 Purple group — ending with animals (DARK HORSE, FUNKY CHICKEN, JUMBO SHRIMP, SEA MONKEY)

A DARK HORSE is an expression for a team or person that isn’t likely to win a competition involving multiple parties, but at least has a decent chance of being competitive. (An underdog, on the other hand, is expected to lose.)

The FUNKY CHICKEN is a classic dance move. It’s also a card-based game:

A JUMBO SHRIMP is a large shrimp, or a member of a minor league baseball team.

A SEA MONKEY is a novelty aquarium pet:

NYT Connections – Red Herrings

BALLOON ANIMAL as a potential purple was the only red herring I saw as I was playing this time. There were also various games and toys that might have tripped some folks up. Let me know if anything else caught your eye!

If you’d like to chat about today’s game of NYT Connections with a group of exceptionally cool and lovely people and also me, you can do just that in our Discord community. We’d love to have you join us.

I’ll be back with another set of NYT Connections hints and answers tomorrow, as well as another edition of this one, all going well. You’ll be able to find both of those on my Forbes author page when the time comes (following me there helps me out too!). As for the weekend editions of my NYT Connections hints and answers column, I’m currently doing that via my newsletter, Pastimes.
