Looking for Sunday’s Connections hints and answers instead? You can find them here:

Hey, everyone! Here’s hoping you had an excellent weekend and that you’re raring to go for the week ahead. I’ve decided to spruce up my place with a little collection of (what I think is) classy video game art, so I’m looking forward to seeing how that looks on my wall when it’s all sorted.

Before I forget yet again, I’ve been thinking for a while about setting up a little discussion group for Connections and this column — probably on Discord — if enough people are interested. If you are, let me know via email, direct message on Twitter or in the comments below!

I always appreciate hearing from readers. It would be fun to get a like-minded group of folks together to chat about each day’s game and whatever else comes to mind. Literally making connections over Connections.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

What Are Today’s Connections Answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

  • Yellow group — kinds of beans (KIDNEY, MUNG, NAVY, PINTO)
  • Green group — attract (DRAW, GRAB, HOOK, PULL)
  • Blue group — automatic gear shifter positions (DRIVE, LOW, NEUTRAL, REVERSE)
  • Purple group — ____pool (CAR, DEAD, LIVER, WHIRL)

I’m now up to five straight perfect games and overall wins. Can’t be mad about that! Here’s how I fared:

For my first guess, I almost included LIVER with the yellows instead of NAVY, but as I double checked the grid, it caught my eye that WHIRL and CAR were linked. Once I made that connection, I looked around the grid and realized what the other -pool words must be, so I got the purples next.

It was fairly straightforward from there, as I got the greens, yellows and finally the blues.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog for hints and the solution for Tuesday’s game if you need them.

P.S. It would be easy enough to recommend one of the Deadpool movies given that popped up in today’s grid. But since it’s October, let’s go with a horror (well, really more of a thriller) movie that stars Ryan Reynolds instead. Buried is a smart little movie in which Reynolds’ character is buried alive for ransom with not much else than a phone and a lighter.

I actually wrote a review of this 13 years ago(!!) but it has been deleted from the website that published it. I was able to find it again thanks to the incredible Wayback Machine. I’d like to think I’m a sharper writer these days, but the phrase “bells and whistles” is in the opening line and I still use that much too often:
