Welcome back to Wordle Wednesday, my dearest and most amazing and generous and above-average-intelligence and likely very good-looking Wordlers! Huzzah!
Each Wednesday we tackle an extra riddle, brain-teaser or logic puzzle to spice up the Wordle of the day. Here’s this week’s:
Ernie lives on the 30th floor of his Manhattan apartment building. Every morning, he takes the elevator down to the lobby and goes to work. Every evening, he takes the elevator from the lobby up to the 15th floor and walks the other 15 flights of stairs to his apartment, unless he’s riding with his roommate, Bert. On those days, they ride all the way to the 30th floor. There is nothing wrong with the elevator, because he takes it all the way down the next morning. Why does Ernie do this?
As always, if you think you know the answer, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. I’ll post the solution tomorrow in the Thursday Wordle guide here on this blog.
Alright, Wordle time.

Wordle Analysis
Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.
MACAW is a really interesting word. It’s almost a palindrome. If you flip the first and last letters upside down and then spell it backwards, it spells MACAW! That’s like a palindrome-once-removed or something. I’ll call it a dalinprome. There, I just coined a new word. Huzzah! I wonder if there are other dalinpromes out there waiting to be found? Likely. If you think of one, let me know.
Also, I have this terrible urge to make a joke about how the Macaw believes the ends justify the means because it’s a macaw-ivellian bird. You may escort me out of the building now.
In terms of guessing game, the less said the better. TRADE wasn’t bad, but 195 words remaining isn’t good either, and ALIGN—while an “excellent guess” according to Wordle Bot, only slashed that to 43. SAUCY wasn’t nearly as saucy as I’d hoped, and 5 words still glared back at me, though all I knew was that I had one green and one yellow box. I tried MACHO, though it’s never worked that well for me in the past, and sure enough the fifth guess was the one: MACAW.
Competitive Wordle Score
I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying the Bot, who I hate with a deep and burning passion.
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “macaw” comes from the Portuguese word “macau,” which is derived from the Tupi-Guarani word “macavuana” or “macaguana.” The Tupi-Guarani languages are spoken by indigenous peoples in Brazil and other parts of South America. The word was likely adopted by Portuguese explorers and traders who encountered these colorful and large parrots in the New World, particularly in the Amazon rainforest.
