Saturday is here at last! It’s the very first Saturday of September, which is already shaping up to be a great month. August was pretty awesome for a whole host of reasons, and for the first time in a long time I have a pretty good feeling about it all. Life and all that jazz.

Today I got lucky. I guessed PEARL because it’s a beautiful word and honestly a pretty good starting guess—and one I’ve never tried before—but it didn’t do all that great today, with 201 possible solutions remaining. Then I screwed up with my second guess and left the ‘R’ in the same box! Oy vey, Erik! Still, this slashed things from 201 to just 34 and—at a bit of a loss—I decided to guess something with the ‘O’ in the first box and the ‘R’ in the last box. I figured if the ‘E’ wasn’t in the last box it was probably an ‘ER’ word, so I guessed the first word I thought of, and sure enough OWNER was the Wordle! Lucky me!

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 1 for beating the Bot, who took four tries today. 2 points! Huzzah! (This almost makes up for yesterday’s disaster!)
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “owner” comes from the Middle English word “oener” or “owner,” which is derived from the Old English “agend,” meaning “possessor” or “one who owns.” The Old English “agend” itself comes from the verb “agan,” meaning “to own” or “to have.” This verb is related to the Proto-Germanic word *agan, which also means “to have” or “to possess.”
The root of these words can be traced back further to the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂eg-, which means “to have” or “to possess.” Over time, this root evolved through various languages, eventually leading to the modern English “owner.”
