It’s the last Sunday of summer, dearest Wordlers. Try to enjoy this final week of the season. Next up, autumn! I do love autumn, but I feel like it’s not really as long a season as all the rest. In many ways, for me at least, fall ends when Halloween is over. November feels more like some other season entirely. December feels like winter. We need more than four seasons to describe everything. Summer, autumn, gloom, winter, spring. Something like that.
If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, my streaming guide is up and there’s a whole bunch of new stuff out on the myriad streaming services out there, though next weekend is even more crowded with new shows.

I chose PINES for my opening guess because the local bluegrass festival is named after our lovely Ponderosa forest and it’s going on this weekend. Alas, it was not a great opener, leaving me with 347 words to choose from. CRATE slashed that down to just 5 and would have honestly been a far better starting guess. Oh well! DECOR was the first thing I came up with at this point, and Wordle Bot said I should have gone with DECRY instead. Still, I only had one possible answer at this point: RECUR for the win!

0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot, who got it in just three today. Sigh.
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “recur” comes from the Latin recurrere, meaning “to run back” or “to return.” It is composed of the prefix re- (“again” or “back”) and currere (“to run”). The term entered Middle English through Old French, retaining the sense of something returning or happening repeatedly.
