Looking for Tuesday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here:

Welcome back to Wordle Wednesday, oh my puzzle solving droogies! Every Wednesday, before we get to the Wordle I dish out an extra challenge. Sometimes it’s a riddle, sometimes a brain-teaser, other times a logic puzzle or something else entirely. We must keep our wits about us, after all.

Today’s is a bit of an odd riddle, and I’m curious how you all fare:

We deck our halls with it and dye our linens. But should it come creeping up the cobbles we scrub it out fast as we can. When it blooms beneath our skin, we bleed it out. And when we, together all, find that our reach has exceeded our grasp, we cut it down, we stamp it out, we spread ourselves atop it and smother it beneath our bellies, but it comes back… What is it?

I’ll post the answer in tomorrow’s Wordle guide. If you’ve come up with the solution shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

SPARE just popped into my head when I began my guesses today. I’ve used it before. It’s a pretty solid opener. Today it left me with 143 remaining solutions. I decided to use the yellow ‘R’ in a new spot and try to get a vowel or two. I came back with a green ‘O’ and plenty of possible solutions left. I picked TORCH and lucky for me—with 11 words remaining—it was the correct answer!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 0 for tying the Bot. I’ll take it!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word torch comes from Old French torche, which referred to a “twisted thing” or “torch made of twisted tow dipped in wax.” This, in turn, comes from the Latin word torca, derived from torquere, meaning “to twist.” The root torquere is also the origin of several other English words involving twisting or turning, such as “torque” and “contort.”

The original use of the word referred to the twisted shape of the flammable material used in ancient torches. Over time, it came to be applied specifically to the portable source of light.
