Today is Friday which means we have 2XP for Competitive Wordlers, doubling our points (or our negative points). It’s also Wordle #1196. Wordle #1197 will be Saturday the 28th, #1198 will be Sunday the 29th and #1199 will be Monday the 30th. October 1st will be Wordle #1200, which feels nice and even and right to me. Orderly, in the ways stars align. Or like the other day when I bought groceries and they cost $88.88.

Alright, TGIF, let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

FLAME turned out to be a good opening guess today, leaving me with just 12 remaining solutions and a green and a yellow box. Of course, 12 is still a tough number and I had no idea what to guess. FAINT? FAITH? FAIRY? FANNY? FATTY? So many possibilities. I went with TINNY to rule out as many letters as possible, and I was lucky. Just one word remained: FAITH for the win! If I’d had more of that, in my ability to blindly guess the right answer and have a sense of irony at the same time, I would have guessed it on #2.

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and 1 for beating the Bot, who took four tries today. 2 points x2 for 2XP Friday = 4 points! Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “faith” comes from the Old French word “feid” or “foi”, which in turn derives from the Latin word “fides”. The Latin “fides” means trust, belief, or confidence, and it is also related to the verb “fidere”, meaning to trust.

In English, “faith” entered the language around the 13th century, maintaining its connection to belief, trust, and loyalty, often in a religious or spiritual context. Over time, “faith” came to denote a strong belief in the doctrines of a religion or in divine power, but its core meaning of trust and confidence remains central to its usage.

Additionally, “fides” in Roman culture was closely associated with loyalty and reliability, particularly in legal and social contexts, which further influenced the word’s evolution into its modern form.
