What a lovely autumn weekend it is, though we are a bit smokey in my neck of the woods. Lightning struck near town, sparking a wildfire that the forest service has let burn. It’s an unplanned controlled burn, basically. The problem with so many forests is that for such a long time we always put the fires out, and this led to overgrowth. Not just trees too close together, but too much flora in general. Too much fuel in too thick of forests leads to massive conflagrations. A more natural woodland burns from time to time, clearing out the underbrush and feeding the soil. So now we get controlled burns to replicate a state of nature, and return the forest to a more natural balance. But smoke is smoke.

Why MOIST you ask? I have no idea. Sometimes words just pop into my head and I roll with the first thing that comes to mind. I followed that rather lousy opener with CRANE and slashed 228 words down to just 3. Once again, I went with the first thing that I thought of—BRAIN (though later I learned there was also GRAIN and DRAIN as options). But I’m so smart, with this big BRAIN of my mine (or maybe I’m just lucky) that I got the Wordle in three. Huzzah!

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word brain comes from the Old English word brægen, which referred to the organ inside the head. Its origins can be traced further back to Proto-Germanic (bragnam), and it’s likely related to similar words in other Germanic languages, like Dutch (brein). The ultimate origin is uncertain, but it could be connected to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning “to burn” or “to bubble,” potentially alluding to the texture or appearance of the brain.
