It’s Wordle Wednesday folks and that means I have a riddle for you. We’ll get right to it:
“First think of the person who lives in disguise,
Who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies,
Next tell me what’s always the last thing to mend,
The middle of middle and end of the end?
And finally give me the sound often heard,
During the search for a hard-to-find word.
Now string them together, and answer me this,
Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?”

This one really stumped me, despite guessing the ‘O’ right off the proverbial bat. FLOAT left me with a whopping 270 remaining possible solutions, and SPINE only cut that number to 37. Ouch. GOURD felt like a natural next guess—had to rule out the ‘U’ after all—but apparently five words remained. I could only think of two: HOBBY and MOMMY and I chose the wrong one. Apparently others, like COCKY, were options so I guess I got lucky even in five. Huzzah?

I get 0 points for guessing in four, and lose a point for losing to the Bot, who took four tries today.
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “mommy” is a diminutive form of “mom,” which itself is a variation of “mother.” The root “mother” comes from the Old English word mōdor, which is derived from the Proto-Germanic mōdēr and the Proto-Indo-European méh₂tēr, meaning “mother.” “Mommy” became common in the 19th century as a childlike or affectionate way to refer to one’s mother, similar to how “daddy” is used for “father.” It reflects the tendency in many languages to use reduplication or diminutives when addressing parents in an endearing way.
