Looking for Wednesday’s Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here:
Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, and I snagged a riddle from the Harry Potter series to give all you fine puzzle-solvers an extra challenge, as I do every Wednesday. Today, I will reveal the answer. This was the riddle:
“First think of the person who lives in disguise,
Who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies,
Next tell me what’s always the last thing to mend,
The middle of middle and end of the end?
And finally give me the sound often heard,
During the search for a hard-to-find word.
Now string them together, and answer me this,
Which creature would you be unwilling to kiss?”
The answer—which some of you guessed correctly—is a spider! I am as big a fan of spiders as Indiana Jones is of snakes.
I’m much more fond of Wordles. Let’s solve today’s!

Well this was, thankfully, not as hard as yesterday’s Wordle. I got lucky, even with my big mistake today. STARE was a strong opening guess, leaving me with two yellows and a green and just 8 words remaining. I’ve been feeling the season and when I thought of GRAVE—so fitting with Halloween so near—I jumped on it, even though it stupidly reused the ‘A’ in the same yellow box. Oops! Lucky for me, this still slashed my remaining possible solutions down to just one, and oddly enough this also feels appropriate for both Halloween and Thanksgiving: CARVE for the win!
Competitive Wordle Score
I get 1 point for guessing in three and promptly lose it since the Wordle Bot guessed in just two tries today. Drat!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word carve comes from Old English ceorfan, which means “to cut, cut out, or engrave.” This in turn comes from the Proto-Germanic kerbaną, meaning “to cut or split.” The word is related to similar terms in other Germanic languages, such as Old Norse karfa (to carve) and Old High German kerban (to cut). The root also shares ties with the Proto-Indo-European gerbh- meaning “to scratch or carve.” Over time, carve has come to signify the act of shaping or cutting with precision, especially in wood, stone, or meat.
