It’s Thor’s Day, and those of you out there not still hungover from this week’s big election are probably distracting yourselves with more entertaining things, like games and puzzles. Wordle, apparently. In any case, yesterday I gave you a special challenge. Today, I’ll divulge the answer.
Here was yesterday’s puzzle:
Four Animal People need to cross a dangerous bridge at night. They have only one flashlight, and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without it. The bridge can only hold two people at a time, and each person walks at a different speed:
- Mr. Fox takes 1 minute to cross.
- Mrs. Alligator takes 2 minutes to cross.
- Mr. Orangutan takes 5 minutes to cross.
- Mrs. Sloth takes 10 minutes to cross.
If two Animals cross together, they must go at the slower Animal’s pace. The goal is for everyone to cross the bridge in 17 minutes or less. How do they do it?
The solution:
- Mr. Fox and Mrs. Alligator cross first. This takes 2 minutes.
- Mr. Fox returns. This takes 1 minute. 3 minutes have now passed.
- Mr. Orangutan and Mrs. Sloth cross, taking 10 minutes. 13 minutes have now passed.
- Mrs. Alligator returns, taking 2 minutes. 15 minutes have now passed.
- Finally, Mr. Fox and Mrs. Alligator cross, taking 2 more minutes for a total of 17 minutes.

I guessed VOTER for obvious reasons, and it ended up being quite lucky. Just 3 words remained! EVICT, which also sort of feels timely in its own weird way, left me with just one: EVENT for the win! Also, well, sort of appropriate . . . .

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word event traces back to Latin origins. It comes from the Latin word eventus, meaning “outcome, occurrence, or accident,” which in turn is derived from the verb evenire, meaning “to come out, happen, or result.” Evenire itself is formed from ex- (“out of”) and venire (“to come”).
The term traveled into Middle French as événement, retaining the sense of something that happens or takes place, especially as an outcome or result. In English, event took on its modern meaning by the late 16th century, signifying a notable happening or occurrence, often with a sense of significance.
