Another day, another dollar. One more for the books. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow . . . which is the start of one of Shakespeare’s finest monologues, from the play Macbeth. The murderous Scottish king, sequestered in his castle at Dunsinane, preparing for battle against his gathering foes, receives word that his wife has killed herself. He says:

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,

Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,

To the last syllable of recorded time;

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,

That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,

And then is heard no more. It is a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

Signifying nothing.

Pretty grim. I suppose that’s what happens when you hear a witchy prophecy, murder the king in cold blood and take his throne, and rule as a tyrant. Power corrupts. But I digress. We have a Wordle to solve!

I lucked out in a big way today, after my opening guess flopped. PLEAT was only useful in that it removed five common letters from the guessing pool. With zero yellow or green boxes, I had to guess all new letters. GROIN seemed like a good option here, and it turned out to be very good, leaving me with just one possible solution: GOING for the win! What a very odd Wordle . . . .

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Going” originates from Old English “gān” (to go), linked to Proto-Germanic “gāną” and Proto-Indo-European *“ǵhē-“ (to step or move). It evolved through Middle English “goinge” into its modern form.
