It’s Wordle Wednesday, dearest Wordlers which means just one thing: An extra challenge awaits! As I do every Wednesday, here’s a riddle for you to solve before we get to the main attraction.
Today’s festive riddle:
I follow the jolly man dressed in red,
But I bring fear and dread instead.
Before you’re naughty, best think twice

I wanted to do something festive and holiday-ish for my opening guess because we put up our Christmas tree and decorations, but I was coming up with words like TREES and LIGHT and these just didn’t seem like great options. I guess the word BRAIN popped into my brain at this point and I plugged it in. Lucky me, the ‘B’ was yellow. That’s a much less common letter so I knew my options were narrowed down considerably. I tried DOUBT to rule out as many vowels as possible, and was even luckier with a green ‘U’. At this point, the only word I could come up with was PLUMB and sure enough, it was the Wordle! Huzzah!

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another point for beating the Bot, whose four tries just didn’t cut it today. 2 points for me! Double huzzah!
How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
- You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “plumb” originates from the Latin word plumbum, meaning “lead.” It was used to describe a lead weight on a line, which was employed by builders and sailors to determine vertical alignment (or “true”). Over time, it came to refer metaphorically to “being perfectly vertical” or “true,” as well as the act of measuring or testing depth or accuracy. Its use expanded further into idiomatic and figurative meanings, such as “to plumb the depths.”
