I came up with a holiday last year in preparation for the winter. I call it Midwinter’s Day, and it takes place directly between the start of winter and the beginning of spring. The idea is to have another holiday of lights and feasting dead-smack in the center of the dark, snowy, cold times, since Christmas always seems to come a little too early in that regard. Of course, this winter has felt more like spring, so the need for such a respite is not as great. But I still plan on celebrating it with my family. Midwinter’s Eve falls on the 4th of February, and Midwinter’s Day on the 5th.
I have a couple things worked out. On Midwinter’s Eve, everyone has to turn off screens for at least an hour, as well as lights. You light some candles, pretend like the power went out, play some music or sit around and talk. I had this idea the last time the power actually went out, when all my teenagers suddenly reverted back to little kids, playing hide and seek and goofing around with no screens in sight.
Then, on Midwinter’s Day I plan to bake bread and make a good wintry soup or stew and have a proper feast. I wanted the “traditional” meal for this day to be much different from Thanksgiving. No turkey or anything like that. Wouldn’t it be nice if Father Winter granted us a snowfall for this fledgling holiday? A boy can dream.
In any case, that’s my ramble. Now let’s solve this Wordle!

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word chore comes from the Middle English chare or char, meaning “turn” or “occasion” (as in a turn of work or a task). It is related to the Old English cerr or cyrr, meaning “turn” or “occasion.” Over time, the meaning evolved to refer specifically to routine tasks or household duties. The modern spelling chore emerged in American English in the 18th century.
