Donald Trump has announced that MAGA loyalist Kash Patel will be his new FBI director.
The president-elect announced Patel to the job on Saturday evening.
“I am proud to announce that Kashyap “Kash” Patel will serve as the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and “America First” fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Earlier Trump said that Charles Kusher, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, will be the new U.S. ambassador to France.
He described Kushner, a former convicted felon, as “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker, who will be a strong advocate representing our Country & its interests…. Congratulations to Charlie, his wonderful wife Seryl, their 4 children, & 14 grandchildren.”
In 2005, Kushner – an attorney – was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. As a convicted felon, he was also disbarred in three states.
He was pardoned by Trump in December 2020.
Jared Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, previously worked as a senior advisor to the President-elect during his first term.

How small businesses are already preparing for Trump’s second presidency
Saturday 30 November 2024 17:40 , Mike Bedigan
Small businesses are already taking steps to mitigate potential fallout from Donald Trump’s second presidency, less than two months out from his inauguration.
Owners of such businesses are already making moves to avoid expected cost increases, caused by the President-elect’s threatened tariffs — or weighing whether to take a financial hit or pass it on to customers.
Beatrice Barba runs Tabor Place, a San Francisco Bay Area maker of nontoxic cups and lunch boxes for children. She told NBC News that she intended to spend 2025 innovating new styles of her signature cups, but has dropped those plans and stockpiling as much of her basic inventory as she can.
Her entire product line is made in China, one of the countries that Trump has vowed to hit with heavy import tariffs.
Barba did not expect Trump to win, and doubted his commitment to imposing the tariffs if he did. Over the next couple of months, she’s hoping her Chinese suppliers can churn out a single $200,000 order for the whole year — and get it through U.S. ports — before the President-elect takes office.
“That at least buys me a little bit of time to weather the storm,” she told NBC. “There’s a sense of urgency, and I’m very nervous.”

Democratic Senator suggests New York state becomes part of Canada
Saturday 30 November 2024 16:40 , Mike Bedigan
Following the outcome of the presidential election, New York State Senator Liz Krueger has floated an interesting idea for her state… join Canada.
Krueger, whose district includes Manhattan, has suggested New York secede from the United States and become a province of Canada to protest Donald Trump’s policies on things like mass deportation.
“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” Krueger said to Politico this month.
The Senator first proposed a secession in September.
“I thought I would suggest to Canada that instead of us all trying to illegally cross the border at night without them noticing, which is pretty hard because there’s a lot of us, that they should instead agree to let us be the southeast province, a new province of Canada,” Krueger said in an interview at the time.

These local sheriffs are already preparing to help Trump carry out his mass deportation plans
Saturday 30 November 2024 13:40 , Oliver O’Connell
Donald Trump’s plan to immediately carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history upon taking office is banking on a key ally: conservative sheriffs.
There are some 6,000 federal immigration agents in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), but the incoming administration is counting on sympathetic local law enforcement to be its eyes and ears in communities and jails across the country.
While police chiefs are appointed, sheriffs are often elected and exercise broad powers, including running county jail systems. Many right-leaning sheriffs, whose own partisan politics align with the new administration’s, are eager to join forces.

Trump’s tariffs in his first term did little to alter the economy. This time things could be very different

Donald Trump loved to use tariffs on foreign goods during his first presidency. But their impact was barely noticeable in the overall economy, even if their aftershocks were clear in specific industries.
The data show they never fully delivered on his promised factory jobs. Nor did they provoke the avalanche of inflation that critics feared.
This time, though, his tariff threats might be different.

Trump wants Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal before inauguration, report says
Friday 29 November 2024 22:35 , Oliver O’Connell
Senator Lindsey Graham has told Axios that Donald Trump wants a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza before he returns to the White House on January 20, 2025.
There are still 101 hostages including seven Americans held by Hamas. Israeli intelligence believes about half are still alive. More than 44,000 Palestinians have been killed in nearly 14 months since the war began after the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
“Trump is more determined than ever to release the hostages and supports a ceasefire that includes a hostage deal. He wants to see it happening now,” Graham told Axios.
“I want people in Israel and in the region to know that Trump is focused on the hostages issue. He wants the killing to stop and the fighting to end.”
The senator added: “I hope President Trump and the Biden administration will work together during the transition period to release the hostages and get a ceasefire.”
Graham has just returned from a visit to the Middle East. He contends that Trump wants a deal in Gaza so he can focus on other foreign policy objectives in the region — normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia and forming a regional alliance against Iran.

Biden greeted warmly in Nantucket and comments on bomb threats to lawmakers
Friday 29 November 2024 21:30 , Oliver O’Connell
Joe Biden and his family exited Nantucket Bookworks at 3:33 p.m. The president was carrying the book, The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi, according to a photo taken by a member of the pool.
Jill Biden and Baby Beau were both carrying what looked like bookstore-branded tote bags over their shoulders.
Shortly before leaving, Hunter hugged someone inside the store.
Outside the bookstore, a reporter asked the president from across the street for any reaction to the reported bomb threats against lawmakers and swatting against Trump cabinet nominees. He responded: “We’re working that hard, the FBI.”
The Bidens received a warm reception from pedestrians, with some cheering. They briefly stopped at the Samuel Owen Gallery and the home goods store Centre Pointe
He and his family then continued to walk down Broad Street as pedestrians cheered and called out to him. He stopped in front of Jared Coffin House to briefly interact with some of those people. The pool was too far away to hear anything.
Someone yelled to the president, “Joe! We love you!” He gave a thumbs up and said, “Thank you.”
He confirmed to a reporter that he expected to speak with Donald Trump again during the transition period. The family then stopped in at the leather goods shop Craftmasters of Nantucket.

What happened to Trump’s border wall?
Friday 29 November 2024 21:10 , Oliver O’Connell
…and no, Mexico didn’t pay for it.
Josh Marcus writes:
Donald Trump doesn’t really talk about the border wall anymore.
After making the wall the central part of his 2016 campaign, shutting down the government for weeks in an unsuccessful bid to secure its funding, and spending billions to build it anyway, the president-elect’s immigration politics have shifted to an even more aggressive place this time around.
Instead of a wall, paid for by Mexico, Trump now wants a “bloody” mass deportation operation immediately removing millions of people, including by potentially reviving family separation.
But the federal border wall, spanning more than 450 miles across four states, remains. It continues to deeply impact the people, environment, and politics of the border and beyond.
And it’s an idea that’s spreading. During the eight years of Trump and Biden, Republican states began building their own separate border walls, too.
