The main event features former bantamweight champion Petr Yan and former flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo in a crucial battle at 135 pounds. The matchup could lead the winner to a title shot, or at the very least, a title eliminator fight.
Yan is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Song Yadong in March. The win snapped a three-fight losing streak, though two of the three losses came by split decision. Yan also just re-signed with the UFC, setting him up for a potential second run at the title.
Figueiredo is undefeated since moving up from flyweight to 135 pounds. Figueiredo’s move to bantamweight has been impressive, as his performances have exceeded expectations despite facing larger opponents.
In December 2023, Figueiredo defeated Rob Font via unanimous decision. He submitted former champion Cody Garbrandt in the second round in April. Most recently, Figueiredo defeated Marlon Vera in August.
Their fight could be a highly tactical battle or a war between two of the more respected veterans in the UFC.
The co-main event will have similar stakes.
Former title challenger and No. 2-ranked Xiaonan Yan will try to hold her spot in the UFC women’s strawweight rankings as she takes on the fast-rising No. 10-ranked Tabatha Ricci. Yan is looking to break a trend that has seen her alternate two-fight losing skids with short win streaks.
The 35-year-old earned a title shot against Weili Zhang but lost to her countrywoman via unanimous decision. Yan’s durability and striking skill have kept her among the elite in the strawweight division despite tough losses to top-ranked opponents and the champion, Weili. Yan would love to get another shot down the road.
However, Ricci has other plans.
The 29-year-old Brazilian has been nearly flawless since moving down to strawweight, where her only loss is a split-decision defeat against Lupita Godinez in November 2023. A victory over Yan would vault Ricci into the Top 5 and potentially make her next in line for a shot at Weili or whomever has the 115-pound title near the middle of 2025.
Ricci’s rapid rise has been attributed to her exceptional grappling and improved striking, making her one of the division’s most exciting prospects. The next step in her maturation could be an ability to finish fights.
Up to now, Ricci has been a decision machine with one win by finish in her nine-fight UFC career. Could Saturday be the day for her second win by stoppage?
We’ll see. Be on the lookout for more coverage leading up to UFC Macau.
