Agentic AI has become the phrase everyone is trying to wrap their arms around. It’s showing up in vendor messaging, conference sessions, board slides — you name it. And yet, for many people actually running security programs, the definition shifts depending on who you’re talking to. Sometimes it refers to basic enrichment steps. Other times it suggests something much closer to independent decision-making.
In that fog, security leaders are trying to sort out a basic question: where does agentic AI actually make a meaningful difference, and where is it just a new label on familiar automation?
At its core, agentic AI represents a move away from rigid, step-by-step playbooks toward systems that can interpret context, adjust their approach and manage multi-stage tasks. That’s a significant jump, and it explains why enthusiasm and discomfort tend to appear in the same conversation. It’s easy to say “let the system handle it.” It’s harder to hand over real responsibility without confidence in how the decisions are being made.
Why “Controlled Autonomy” Matters
That tension came up in a recent discussion I had with Cyware executives while they walked through their AI Fabric approach. They echoed something I hear often from CISOs: security teams don’t need theatrics; they need help with the work already crushing them.
Patrick Vandenberg put it in direct terms: “There’s a lot of excitement, but our customers need pragmatic support for the problems they have today.” Most environments contain years of technical debt, siloed tools and tribal processes. Autonomy has to live inside that reality.
A more workable path is controlled autonomy: systems that can collect signals, validate assumptions and automate portions of a workflow without drifting into black-box territory. In practice, that means the AI can move work forward but still operates inside rules the organization understands.
Digital Teammates, Not Replacements
The appeal is obvious. Security teams don’t have the option of hiring their way out of alert overload. Telemetry keeps expanding, and analysts have to make triage decisions they wish they didn’t have to make. In that world, it makes sense to treat AI agents as the digital equivalent of support staff — specialists who take on defined responsibilities so humans can focus on judgment, not logistics.
Cyware’s Sachin Jade described the adoption curve this way: “In the beginning, people want everything to come to them for review. But as time goes by, they don’t want to babysit it. They want the agent to learn, and they want to step in only when it matters.” That tracks with what many teams experience. Oversight comes first, and trust is slowly earned over time as confidence builds.
It also helps to be realistic about what AI is: probabilistic. Not flawless. Not omniscient. But if it can reduce noise, speed up routine checks, stitch together clues across tools and present analysts with clearer decisions, it doesn’t need to be perfect to be valuable.
Building Workflows That Don’t Collapse Under Speed
Agentic AI amplifies whatever structure you already have — good or bad. That’s why transparency and policy boundaries matter. Teams need visibility into why a system recommended an action or escalated an event. They also need workflows that account for drift, dead ends and incomplete data. Without that foundation, autonomy just gives you the same problems, faster.
But when the foundation is there, the upside can be significant. Agentic systems can push work forward while analysts sleep. Intelligence feeds tie directly into triage steps. Investigation tasks chain together without someone manually copying data between tools. And response recommendations arrive with meaningful context rather than smartphone notification at 2 a.m.
It enables security teams to reduce the amount of low-value work that prevents them from doing the job they’re actually hired to do.
A Different Pace for Security Operations
That’s the part of agentic AI that’s most interesting to me. If implemented well, it changes the tempo of security operations. Instead of a stop-start cycle — triage today, analysis tomorrow, response sometime after that — you get a more continuous workflow.
Security has been trying to reach that kind of operating model for years. Agentic AI doesn’t guarantee it, but it makes it more attainable — as long as organizations approach it with clear expectations and the right level of scrutiny.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress. If we get this right, agentic AI won’t shrink the analyst’s role. It will expand their reach, sharpen their decisions and help teams finally keep pace with the environments they’re responsible for defending.
